Is there a way for me to convert my iphoto slideshow to idvd in widescreen format? Seems that the pictures are converted to 4:3 when exported to idvd.

After making the slideshow in iPhoto, click on settings then select 16:9 Widescreen at the Slideshow Format.

You can actually your build your slideshow (with several folders) in iDVD without using the iPhoto.
iDVD has a widescreen option under Project menu -> switch to widescreen (16:9)

i think iphoto converts the slideshow to 4:3 format when it transfers it to idvd. so even if the idvd file is using widescreen settings, the slideshow itself is still in 4:3 format.

You could change the slideshow format to 16:19 and export it as widescreen for iDVD.
