Hello everyone! Mind if I ask two of my concerns regarding iphoto? 1. whenever i import my images from my digicam via iphoto, the picturs get stored in the Pictures/iPhoto Library folder. This eats up a lot of space in my first partition where my OS resides. is there a way to change the folder where iPhoto will store my image files? 2. whenever i import image files already in the other partition of my hd, it copies the same image files into the Pictures/iPhoto Library folder as well, thereby eating also precious space in the partition where my OS resides.is there also a way not to let iPhoto duplicate the files, and just refer to the folder where the images originally are located? Doomo arigatoo! Ja mata! ^_- Hsu

From iPhoto Help Moving the iPhoto Library to a new location 1. Quit iPhoto. 2. Move the iPhoto Library folder to a new location on your computer. IMPORTANT: If you've created multiple photo libraries, be sure to move only the library currently displayed when iPhoto is open. If you want to move a photo library other than the one you're currently working on, you first need to switch to it. To learn more about switching between photo libraries, click "Tell me more." 3. Open iPhoto. 4. Click Find Library. 5. Select the library and click Open. Also, iPhoto really needs to import pictures before it can do anything so you can't change that behavior unfortunately. HTH.
Hi hsu_chi. I used to have a partition in my 80GB hard drive (one part of the drive for system files and applications, the other for files/documents). Obviously, this is a carry-over habit from my Windoze days. However, since I can't find any inherent benefits to such a setup in OSX, I reverted to a single drive. I found having the partition to be such an inconvenience. But if you choose to go the way of partition, just search VersionTracker and you'll find a few iPhoto library managers: iPhoto Library Manager, iPhoto Buddy and iPhoto Librarian.
Tnx everyone...will try your suggestions. Thanks very much!!! ^_- I'll also download the apps you suggested, elbert...i guess i'll have to choose which one works conveniently for me after installation. Hsu
There's a little trick that i use. 1. Locate the iPhoto (or iTunes library or whichever directory you want to relocate). 2. Copy the directory. 3. Locate the partition and particular folder you want the iPhoto or iTunes to reside (aside from the default location of course) 4. Click Paste, OS X will now paste a copy of the iPhoto or iTunes file Folder. 5. Maka an Alias of the newly pasted folder 6. Copy the Alias folder (file) 7. Go back to original folder where iPhoto or iTunes photo folder was located 8. Paste the Alias Folder 9. You should now see two folders the Alias folder and the original iPhoto or iTunes file folder 10. Move original (itunes or iPhoto) file folder to trash bin 10a. BEFORE DELETING THE original folder from the TRASH BIN make sure the files were transferred properly into the new target partition. 11. rename Alias Folder to the name of the original (iTunes or iPhoto) file folder. 12. You need not change anything in the iPhoto or iTunes setting on folder or file locations. 13. iTunes and iPhoto will now be fooled that the original folder is still in the default folder but in reality the alias folder is redirecting the iPhoto or iTunes program to the moved files * this is a little tedious but its an alternative to changing the default file location of iTunes or iPhoto [Edited on 1-23-2005 by alfa]
I have two Macs, a Mini and a PB, both using iPhoto 5. The Mini connects to the digital camera and the iPhoto Library there has the pictures imported properly. I am trying to replicate the same iPhoto Library on the PB so I can take a copy of the pics along with me. So I got this software called Chronosync and synchronized the entire iPhoto Library from the Mini to the PB. The syncronization procedure seems to have worked fine and I see the "iPhoto Library" folder on my PB's Pictures folder. However, I cannot seem to get the pictures onto iPhoto. I noted spawnster's post above and looked for a "Find Library" menu item but it doesnt seem to be anywhere on iPhoto. Hope someone can help.
this is slightly off tangent, but still related... i use iPhoto, right? well, this is how i organize it. 1. save my photos in my own folder, let's say, called "Angel's Photos". 2. drag the photos right into iPhoto. 3. retain the folder "Angel's Photos" with full knowledge that iPhoto has duplicated the picture file somewhere in the Pictures folder. 4. backup all my photos again and again everytime something new is added 5. retain the Angel's Photos folder it is step 5 that i am wondering about, which is related to the original topic. question: 1. is it absolutely necessary to keep the original photo file? 2. can i just delete that folder altogether which is eating up 35MB? 3. iPhoto does keep the original jpg or gif file in its iPhoto folder, right? hope someone can get me out of my misery.
well i have a problem that concerns iphoto import din. the thing is, i dont want iphoto to import the images for me. but it kept popping up whenver i insert my cf cards.. we've tried: 1) deleting pref file 2) searching under iphoto pref and system pref 3) under cd/dvd when insert image cd.. ignore. i dunno what else i can do to stop iphoto from popping up by itself.. any thoughts? am using tiger with iphoto 5.01
You can safely delete the original photo file after you've imported it into iPhoto, iPhoto keep it's own copy (works the same way with iTunes, if you have set iTunes' to Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library).
Try Image Capture -> Preferences -> Camera -> set When a camera is connected, open: to "No application". The Image Capture application should be in your Applications folder. Among other things, Image Capture allows you more flexibility when managing the pictures in your digital camera, you can select to import certain files only as opposed to iPhoto's all-or-nothing way of importing. i use image capture to import photos from my digicam. i create folders then import it manually into iphoto, but as pointed out by angel_benet, this process duplicates the photo file. i find it more organized, and faster to import than iphoto. LLR
was about to say the same thing. thanks pat, i finally deleted the originals. now i can sleep in peace!
