The recent download of MAVERICKS by muggers made me curious about the speed overseas-based Muggers are getting and how unlucky we, Pinas-based muggers, are.

I just read that some LA based muggers with Time Warner Ultimate 50 are/will be getting a speed boost from 50mbps to 100mbps. Local Muggers even with the best PLDT FTTx get around 10 mbps

Just to make us "hate"/envy you even more, Overseas muggers, do you mind sharing your internet speed?

for uniformity, I suggest we follow this format
    here are mine:

    Location : Metro Manila Philippines
    Provider : Destiny Cable internet
    Advertised Speed : 1 mbps
Actual Speed : 1 mbps to 1.5 mbps
    Cost : Php 999 US$ 22.70/mo

    Location : Metro Manila Philippines

IMO, the problem with internet there in PHL is not the speed (as you can see when using Speedtest) biggest issue is stability

My internet here in SG is only 2 mbps (yes its the cheapest plan available because 85% of the time we only connect phones and tablets). I get 2 mbps all day everyday...

Compare that to my Globe connection (below) whose speed changes depending on the time of the day. Our Myanmar office just installed a 20 mbps (speed was also shown by speedtest) office DSL but they still have a hard time sending 1MB files (latence issues)...

    Location: Quezon City
    Provider: Globe
    Advertised Speed: 1 mbps
    Actual Speed: 512 kbps - 1 mbps (normally 1-3am)
    Cost: PHP 999.00
    Monthly Data Limit: None
    Delivery: Phone

I can get an actual download speed of 62.5 KBps - 122KBps max.

    @ice
Thanks for your data. Appreciate it
Speedtest using local ISP server is never good measure.

You can get the promised/advertised speed at anytime within the small MAN (Metroplolitan ARea Network) with just double digit ping/latency times from a server within the MAN, but when you leave the MAN and access the Internet, you are at the mercy of the limited shared bandwidth set by your ISP.

The problem with Manila's internet service boils down to ISP practice

The problem lies when ISPs allocate a small bandwidth to a group of subscriber in a given locale and promising them individual bandwidth TO THE INTERNET that is not sustainable given the size of users

Manila shares the same MAN infrastructure/design as other cities with better internet service.
It is just the ISP's practice/implementation that differs.
If you allot "the right" bandwidth, the subscribers can get maybe 80 to 100% of promised bandwidth at peak times and 100% of bandwidth all other times.

I manage something similar dividing bandwidth from a leased line using pfsense server to several users. If I promise x number of users bandwidth that can't be sustained by my input bandwidth, I end up just like your Globe experience :)

I Mentioned Time Warner's upgrade of their Ultimate 50 plan from 50mbps to 100mbps, if TW does not adjust the input bandwidth as they step up to 100mbps, they would lose more than 24k subscribers they initially lost given the higher expectation from the upgrade

Unless NTC steps in to properly regulate ISPs' internet delivery, Philippines will never be at par with HK, Korea, Japan, the USA when it comes to internet service (Speed/Price/service quality)

(P.S. Utilities cost on a Caribbean island is really expensive. This is the best ISP (in terms of speed, stability and customer service) so far here, so it's ok to pay the price.)

I might not need internet if I lived in a caribbean island. :) I went on a West Caribbean cruise with my wife years ago. Truly breathtaking.

It's really a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. But for me being based here, having no internet sort of paralyzes me. :p

PLDT's Fber is Metro Manila's fastest internet service
I wish Google fiber would wire up Manila just like Kansas City
$120 for gigabit internet, 200 TV channels
    $70 for Gigabit internet only
    $0/Free for 5mbps ($300 installation fee or $25/mo for 12 months)

Edit: Called up Telus today if they can upgrade my connection to a faster speed, and how much would I need to pay. The agent gave me free upgrade from 15mb to 25 mb for 6 months and $10 more after that. The upgrade to 50mb would be 6months $15 and $25 beyond that.

Suffice to say, i jsut got the 25mb speed bump and won't have to pay for another 6 months!
    How cool is that! :D
