I have kids that use the internet for school research. 2 in HS, and 3 in grade school. All of them are proficient users of the internet. I need the peace of mind that they do not stray to off limits site. I need a good "internet nanny", what would you recommend?

Do take note that if your kids are determined or, knowledgeable enough about computers they will always find a way around them most of the time.

    SW vs. timed usage

Well thank you for your feedback.

I expected that they would get smart and eventually findout a way around it. Coupled with what ever filter I would eventually select, I implement timed wireless access through the linksys. Except for my computer, my wife's PB (which my kids do use), their MacMini, and the lone PC at home, are all timed and limited in access during weekdays, and weekends.

Any violation of off limits site will be dealt with severe computer grounding. NO friendster, YIM, iPod access, limewire etc...........:yes:

Please provide me with feedback on these filters. Reading's different from first hand feedback, thank you!!!!

Although I don't use any filters I use Apple Remote Desktop so that I could "observe" what my teenage son is doing. Even if he's using the computer at my parent's place I can still find out what he's up to. I know that all you privacy advocates might raise a brow or two but in this day and age you really have to watch out for your kids.

I use Parental Controls of Tiger, and MacMinder to put limits to the time my kids spend on the computer/application. works very well.

Is this something you can control on a wireless environement? OR do I have to individually set it up per computer? What's the drill, how do i get there? thank you!

We used to have Intego's ContentBarrier installed, but somehow it stopped working when I upgraded our Mac to Tiger. Its an ok app–you can configure usage schedules, manually block inappropriate sites (aside from the regular list of sites updated by the company), browse log files and disable applications.

Our Mac is set up in a common area so there's no need for filters. Talking to our daughter and discussing issues such as trust, online security, inappropriate & risky online behavior has proven to be more effective than installing software to monitor her online activities.

You can find Parental Controls under System Preferences > Accounts and you have to set it up per computer (unless you have Remote Desktop).

    Macminder is here: http://lumacode.com/macminder/
It works per user account, so you would create an account for each of your kids. It logs all applications that are used.
