Hello Steve Jobs mentioned that iLife '06 will be shipping with the new iMacs and MacBooks. How about the old stock of iBooks, PowerBooks et al? I'm planning on getting an iBook and a Mac Mini. Can I expect to get this new suite? Or do I have to pay the $79 and get the boxed copy? thanks scuba_holic
I'd wait for a formal announcement of iLife up-to-date program similar to years past before buying a Mac if your intent is to ensure it gets iLife '06 without having to pay for the copy.
iLife ships with ALL new Macs, free of charge. There's an iLife '06 Up-to-date program available. "Customers who purchase a qualifying new Macintosh computer on or after January 10, 2006 that does not have iLife ’06 included can upgrade to iLife ’06." That website is for U.S. and Canadian customers. Apple Asia usually offers the same, the price is usually P800, which basically is a shipping and handling fee.
Yes.. by buying it. Not being a wise-ass, but technically ALL macs come with iLife so if you buy the boxed product it will 'upgrade' your current iLife to '06. Same goes with OS X. If you buy the boxed product, you are technically upgrading since all macs came with OS X (albeit an older version). Apple DOES make upgrade specific versions of some products (like when I bought the Mini) since that product came pre-installed with 10.3.x and the upgrade disk won't install on a Mac without a pre-existing (and working) system folder in the built-in HD. Hope this helps.
If you mean will Apple offer an upgrade price for those who have iLife '05 or iWork '05, the answer is no. As with Mac OS X, you have to pay full price when you want to upgrade to a newer version (unless you qualify for one of their Up-to-date programs as mentioned by elbertc above).
Had the same situation last year when I got my ibook. Still had the panther OS and did not have an upgrade option to tiger except buying it. As well as iLife....
In my case.. I was able to take advantage of the iLife '05 up-to-date program. Just call your local reseller to arrange it. In my case, I didn't pay for the upgrade DVDs since Apple SG just included it in with my resellers normal apple orders.
If you read carefully Apples iLife Up to date program... it states "If you've purchased a qualifying computer, Apple would like to give you the opportunity to upgrade to iLife ’06 for US$9.95.* Product will begin shipping in January, 2006 for English and in February 2006 for localized versions." iLife ’06 Up-To-Date Qualifying Computers Mac mini Model NumberApple Store Family Part NumberDescription M9686LL/BZ0CFMac mini 1.25GHz M9687LL/BZ0CGMac mini 1.42GHz M9971LL/BZ0CVMac mini 1.42GHz iMac G5 Model NumberApple Store Family Part NumberDescription M9843LL/AZ0BYiMac 17" 1.8GHz M9844LL/AZ0BZiMac 17" 2.0GHz M9845LL/AZ0C0iMac 20" 2.0GHz MA063LL/AZ0CKiMac 17" 1.9GHz MA064LL/AZ0CLiMac 20" 2.1GHz MA039LL/A iMac 17" MA040LL/A iMac 20" MA236LL/A iMac 17" 1.9GHz MA237LL/A iMac 20" 2.1GHz eMac Model NumberApple Store Family Part NumberDescription M9834LL/AZ0BWeMac 17" 1.42GHz M9835LL/AZ0BXeMac 17" 1.42GHz Power Mac G5 Model NumberApple Store Family Part NumberDescription M9747LL/AZ0BKPowerMac G5 2.0GHz M9748LL/AZ0BLPowerMac G5 2.3GHz M9749LL/AZ0BMPowerMac G5 2.7GHz M9590LL/AZ0CBPowerMac G5 2.0GHz M9591LL/AZ0AVPowerMac G5 2.3GHz M9592LL/AZ0AWPowerMac G5 2.5GHz MA337LL/A PowerMac G5 2.5GHz Power Book Model NumberApple Store Family Part NumberDescription M9690LL/AZ0B9PowerBook 12" 1.5GHz M9676LL/AZ0B5PowerBook 15" 1.5GHz M9677LL/AZ0B6PowerBook 15" 1.67GHz M9689LL/AZ0BAPowerBook 17" 1.67GHz M9691LL/AZ0BBPowerBook 12" 1.5GHz M9969LL/AZ0C9PowerBook 15" 1.67GHz M9970LL/AZ0CAPowerBook 17" 1.67GHz M9831LL/A PowerBook 15" 1.67GHz MA015LL/A PowerBook 15" 1.5GHz MA204LL/A PowerBook 15" 1.67GHz iBook Model NumberApple Store Family Part NumberDescription M9846LL/AZ0C1iBook 12" 1.33GHz M9848LL/AZ0C3iBook 14" 1.42GHz M9850LL/A iBook 12" 1.33GHz M9851LL/A iBook 14" 1.42GHz Thus, if you have these macs, you can just pay $9.95 for the iLife 06. Am I right?
If you read it carefully, you'll see the part that states "Customers who purchase a qualifying new Macintosh computer on or after January 10, 2006 that does not have iLife ’06 included can upgrade to iLife ’06." You qualify if you have one of those Macs AND purchased it on or after January 10,2006 (again, as already stated by elbertc).
Back on Topic. @scuba_holic. So as long as you purchase ANY mac after January 10, 2006 You are entitled to a Free upgrade to iLife '06 if your Mac still comes with iLife '05 pre-loaded. I can buy a Mac Mini tomorrow, and just do the paperwork to get the iLife '06 DVD. It will take 2 weeks to process the order (based on my experience), but it beats paying full price.
Update: My Dad bought himself a iBook and it qualifies for the iLife up-to-date program. To avail, just fill up the iLife Up-To-Date Order Form and follow the instructions.
Hey thanks for the update. I have a question though, where is your father located? There is a downloadable form for the Philippines but if you read the terms for the up-to-date program the list of valid countries does not include the Philippines. Just curious scuba-holic
FYI, the philippines DOES qualify. just follow the workflow and complete the forms - if any of you have any problems with this, pls PM me bests pb
I'm interested to know what version they'll send yuu. In all probability, you'll probably get an updater, which looks for a previous install of '05. I could be wrong. Let us know how it goes.
