I just read somewhere that you can actually boot from an external USB hard drive: 1. Partition the drive Correctly for intel macs: make sure in the options you set the Partition Map Scheme to GUID Mode for PPC macs:make sure in the options you set the Partition Map Scheme to Apple partition Map Go to: Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > select drive > partition > options 2. Create a clone of your HD using Carbon copy cloner or super duper or something similar 3. Reboot your mac and hold down the option key when the system is booting back up. This will let you choose your boot drive on startup. Choose your USB drive and continue. You’ll find that the system boots a lot slower, but that is expected of course. With any luck, your backup is an exact replica of your system. Just a question I already have an external drive partitioned, and it looks like the default setting chosen is partition as a master boot record (3rd option), if i re-partition my drive again to have a bootable external back up, will the data on my external drive get erased? I am still using Tiger 10.4.11 NOTE: i have not personally tried this, I am willing to but I just have to make sure that my data will not be erased
there are already several existing threads on this topic. please use the search function next time. thanks.
this thread talked about PPC based macs, and although the connection can also be firewire, USB external drives are formatted just the same. check it out.
yup got it , i see that its the same procedure as i posted but it was still firewire. I never really knew you can boot from a USB (and from a PPC). Just to say that I do my SEARCH too I based my post from This thread that was unsuccessful in booting from a USB external drive with the notion that it is not possible even the links for the directions were not very helpful Anyway sorry for the redundancy
