for: - OS X - MS Office for MAC - Adobe CS3 (the whole package) i bought recently a macbook 120gb hdd. with only those installed plus skype, YM and about 12gb of iTunes library. i noticed that my available space on the macintosh HD is 270MB only. i didn't notice how much space available before i installed the other programs. so, i am wondering if those 3 programs listed above really eat up a lot of hdd space. is this normal? thanks!
try emptying your trash bin. you can also use the program what size freely downloadable from versiontracker to determine what occupies your HD and how much is used.
there's something really wrong there.. i have a 120gb MBP... with 30gb for bootcamp... i have >12gb itunes lib, iwork, office, lots of other apps, and leopard.. i still have 38gb available..
or maybe someone did an archive and install; you might have some previous system versions or some old user files lying around.
thanks for the inputs. i tried to empty my trach bin just now. and it says it cannot be completed because of some locked files. it suggested to press down on the option key while selecting empty trash, but it still won't work. any suggestions? my trash bin has a LOT of deleted files in it. it might be the cause of all these hdd space problem. edit: i checked my trash bin. it has 73GB worth of files inside that i cannot delete. i want to, but mac says it cannot. too much problem for me as a first time mac user.
i restarted, but still cannot delete. here are some of the files that says it is locked which causes the problem: and a lot of .bmp and .txt files. are there any "forced delete" buttons?
restarting won't help deleting locked files in Trash... drag the files to new folder then select all... get info (apple + i)... uncheck locked option... and that's it, you're good to go...
Try this. open the trash. Highlight each individual file that is file that is locked and then press File -> Get Info. On the get info box there is a box with a check on the locked entry. Just untick it and it will be unlocked.
by any chance did these files reside in a parallels or boot camp volume? i noticed that these are windows files... and does os x have write access to these volumes?
these files came form my external hdd which i used to use with my windows based asus. i copied them to the mac hdd to be able to format the external hdd to mac, then copied the files back to the external hdd after formatting. i then sent the files to the trash from the mac hdd, which cannot be deleted.
only 2 left. Nikon Picture project Nikon Picture project transfer i tried the "get info" both files are unlocked, but when i tried to empty the trash, it says it is locked
