i downloaded windows media player 9 from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx but i couldn't open the WindowsMediaInstaller.bin file. VLC runs when I double-click on this, but it doesn't seem to get the job done. is there any other MBP app that can do this? thanks.
Stuffit Expander located here: http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/download.html Download and install the app. Once you're done, go back to the .bin file, and stuffit should generate an "installer" file for you. Good luck!
@deepblue, as wildcard suggested, use Flip4Mac's Windows Media Components for QuickTime instead. It's completely free and it works great, even better than WMP. In fact, the link above brings you to a page within Microsoft.com.
