Hi guys, i need serious help, i bought my Unibody MBP top of the line model last Nov 2, 2008 and about a month into using it, it started hanging and other times the dreaded "Kernel Panic" would show up... i brought to a few well known shops here around manila, and they check it for 2-4 days and then they say they cant find anything wrong with it... the last one i brought it SENCO phils said they coudlnt and would not do anything to it since they've never saw the problem while it was with them... the problems that it has are: 1. Hangs every so often 2. Kernel Panic shows up (roughly been about 10 times since i got it) telling me to do a hard restart 3. It wont let me software update, the software downloads, but it stays stagnant after 1/5 of the bar to install and download. Im seriously at my wits end... i spent a big amount for this laptop and i have no idea what to do with it anymore, honestly i feel cheated out of my cash... please reply with help if u can... Thanks!
While there are more than a few things which you could try (reformat/reinstall, etc.) if you really think you have a lemon the easiest thing to do is, if you could, bring it (or ship it to someone who can bring it) to an Apple store outside the Philippines, preferably in North America, where they have a more friendly return/replacement policy. Short of that, I would try using it until I get the kernel panic—then leaving it like that and bringing it in to an authorized service center still like that.
I would advise reinstalling while early. this to make sure if its a faulty OS or hardware problem. back up your files as well.
hi thanks for all the replies, ive tried everything... i havent touched any of the hardware, whats inside is still straight from the box
Try booting from your OSX install disk and run Disk Utility to repair your macbook's HD. If that doesn't help, you might have defective RAM. Try reinserting them or change their order. If you hear a beep/s during startup, you should replace your RAM. Note: Backup your data first before you do the suggestions above.
I think I have the same thing happened to me just this morning.. My mbp suddenly showed some message box in the middle telling me to restart , so i did. When I restarted, It suddenly hanged on me so I restarted again. When tried to restart it again, the display won't open up and it beeped endlessly.. Is this a problem with the memory?? Because I just recently upgraded it to 4Gb?? Please help. tnx
@lendgr8t Yes I agree with you, it could be faulty RAM. I assume you did not have any problems with the original RAM that came with your Macbook Pro right? Perhaps you should return it and get another batch? @oreador_fanlo Where did you purchase your Macbook Pro and when? Depending on where you purchase it and the date you purchased it, you can get a good return policy. Normally a brand new notebook acting up like that warrants a instant exchange.
Hi Salaryman, i bought the Unibody MBP from Digital Walker, it was purchased on Nov 2, 2008... i first brought in the laptop to them January 4, 2009... thats when they couldnt find a problem
@ salaryman ryan yep. no problems with my original ram.. I'm going back to dw today to have the ram replaced.. I'm thinking of changing it myself, but i'm afraid because i have high static, i've previously toasted two of my pc motherboards when i opened it up to change ram.. Better safe than sorry
Since it was purchased in Digital Walker I suggest you PM Charlie and tell them about your problem. It might take a while for him to answer since he is busy but I believe he can probably help you better then simply the manager or techs there. If not you can contact Apple directly and request for a replacement. But try getting Sir Charlie's attention first!
hi guys, update lang, i contacted charlie na and he helped alot my MBP now has brand spanking new RAM and motherboard thanks for all those who posted cheers!
Wow great news! Glad to hear everything worked out fine in the end! I hope your Mac will give you many years of service!
i think it's MBP that you brought last xmas party, right? anyways, good thing that those defective parts has been replaced.. and i am thinking its under warranty so that you don't need to pay anything? another lesson learned.. btw, did they have any technical explanation about what happen?
