Hi, My brother using an iMac seemed to have lost his disk utility, how can he recover the application? Things tried: Searched the usual location Used Spotlight to search for it checked the Trash bin Any other suggestions?
Reinstall using the original OS X installer. You probably have to use Pacifist to extract it. http://www.charlessoft.com/
Was just wondering if this would work: copy disk utithe program Disk Utility from another Mac running OS X 10.4.10.
Seems possible. I checked the package contents of Disk Utility and it appears to have all the stuff needed - executable, framework, plist, plug-ins and resources. It's so small (11 Mb universal), will fit well in a thumb drive. To be safe, one should copy the DU from a similar machine (either PPC or Intel).
hi soloworx - do i just send him the diskutility.app file? will that include all the stuff needed? if not, where do I find the other files?
If he just deleted the diskutility.app and nothing else, it might work. try it. you have nothing to lose.
thanks for the help, my brother will try it out after work. will update the thread if it works I tried to email him the file but entourage is not allowing me to... anyway, it might be in his install disk anyway.
Yah, in my experience, it's better to zip an application before sending it. Also, you're bro is using an Intel iMac?
Does he still have his OS CD? He can use the CD and instead of installing the OS, he can repair or choose which component he wants to re-install.
hi pat, yes, he is using an Intel iMac. i told him to look for it in his OSX CD but I was also able to send it to him after zipping it. I don't have news yet if he or his wife has successfully fixed it. Cheers!
Hi guys! I use an MBA 1st gen. My Disk Utility is missing. Spotlight and Utilities folder does not show it. Can I just download it? If yes, where from? I'm currently on 10.5.5. If I download and upgrade to 10.5.7, will it magically give me back my Disk Utility? Need your help. Especially soloworx. Thank you!
@shinobi: Interesting. Have you tried creating a new administrator account using System Prefs>>System>>Accounts and seeing if the new account has Disk Utility? If it does, you could try copying it onto you main account. I did this trick when I messed up all the Application Icons on my main admin account. Also, do you use Time Machine? Trying going back in time in your Utilities folder and see if it appears in older backups.
hi raf, i tried creating a new Admin account but when i logged in through it, it also does not have Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. i haven't tried pacifist yet since i haven't read enough reviews encouraging its use. i still have both install discs for my MBA 1st gen. i tried loading the 1st cd but all it does is prompt me to install the entire MAC OS X itself. i tried loading the 2nd cd but even after i restarted the Mac and held on to the C key, the Mac just won't boot up using the 2nd cd unlike it did on the 1st. i don't have too many friends who own a Mac so i don't have anyone close i could copy it from via thumbdrive. so my question is, is there any other way i could get it from the install discs wherein the discs would just list it so it would be easy for me to simply pick and install it? thank you!
