hi peeps! my apologies for all the questions today, but i just did an HD upgrade on my macbook unibody. the original hard drive was a 250GB hard drive with used space of 69GB. i upgraded to a 500GB hard drive and after they did the transfer to my new hard drive the hard drive used space bumped up to 74.5GB. my question is whats taking up the extra 5.5GB more space than my original HD? is this normal and has anyone else experienced this problem? thanks a lot philmug peeps for all the help and making my transition to mac an extremely easy and enjoyable one! oh yeah i million thanks also to the staff of digital hub vira mall for being extremely helpful and taking the time out to contact sir charlie to make sure i got the best prices for my upgrades! miguel
when did you upgrade to snow leopard? before or after the hd upgrade? snow leopard reports hd size in base 10 instead of base 2 so the size used will seem larger and it will report the whole 500 gb. that might be it. cheers!
i think i figured it out. i also upgraded my ram to 4GB and when i did a file sweep i found that the sleep imge files are at 4GB instead of 2GB. so i think i have 2GB accounted for now where the heck is my 3.5GB?:slanted:
thanks for the suggestion. i ran all the clean up tools on onyx though, but it only cleared up about 200MB. hmmmmm....... this is bugging me out!
Relax If I were you, let it go. With the way modern operating systems work, it's not unusual for hard disk consumption to see-saw (sometimes considerably) when you launch and use apps. Be concerned if your free space keeps shrinking.
ha ha ha! advice taken! i have officially let this go. its funny right after i read your post it all of a sudden didnt matter. thanks!
If you really want to free up a few gigs and aren't squeamish about doing it, you might want to consider stripping the unused foreign languages and the PPC code from the applications on your Mac. I use Xslimmer for this since it has a restoreable backup feature that let's you restore everything back to how it was in case you run into problems. Only thing is it isn't free. I got this as part of a package a few months back. Freeware that does the same thing include Monolingual and Trimthefat. Only thing is, none of these has a backup feature that lets you restore things like Xslimmer does. The first time I ran Xslimmer, it freed up 4-5GBs worth of space.
i was able to clear up the languages, and printer drivers. i ended up re-instaing the printer drivers again cause it was a lot more useful then i realized. i also uninstalled some apps that i dont use like garage band. i dont think i will ever be able to recover the 3GB lost, but right now i think ive been able to let it go. he he he
