I just came across a script that's just perfect for obsessive compulsives like me.

I didn't like the short name that i had chosen for the home folder of my wife's iBook.

I learned the hard way about a year ago that you just can't rename the home folder without dire consequences.

I came across this script yesterday and it's an absolute godsend.

It's not for the faint of heart though.

Make sure you backup before trying this. You'll have to run this from an administrator account that's different from the one you'll be renaming.

Oh and you will have to point iPhoto to your default iPhoto library again after the operation.

Changing the User's Short Name - Mac OS X

Macworld: Mac Gems Weblog: "one of the most frequent questions I get from users of Mac OS X is How do I change my short username?"
The question usually comes from people who chose a particular short username when they first started up their Mac under OS X but later decided that they wanted something different. It’s also common among those who’ve come into possession of a Mac previously owned by someone else—they’d rather have their own username than the previous owners.

IMHO I will not really recommend changing the Mac OS short name unless you really really really have too!

Apple has a very good reason why Mac OS X doesn't allow you to easily change your account short name, for there is a possibility of having software and even OS problems afterwards.

This is just a warning for newbies, just in case you plan to use this software to change your user short names anytime you like :)

I tried it. No problems so far. Just remember to do this from a different admin account from the one whose name you are changing. restart right afterwards

Im trying to change the short name of my mac. But i cant rename a Folder under Finder>Users. How do i rename it? Selecting the folders name and then pressing Return won't help. Pati 2nd click ayaw din. Under 'Get info', naka grey yung 'Name & Extension:'

Pano ko po ma-rename yung folder?

nakalog-in ako as Admin, and yung sharing & permissions - naka read and write naman sa lahat.

    Thanks.
