I've been thinking about Globe's policy to lock both eSIM and physical SIM to them and I see sound arguments for and against it. That being said, I have a proposal in mind which I hope Globe, and Smart down the line, will consider:

Carriers should allow unlocking of the eSIM-capable phones of their customers if they are already one year into their two-year contract. Higher chances of approval if those who have completed a previous contract with them.

Again, just a proposal on my end which I think can be viable compromise for both carrier and customer.

its the carrier policy to do network-lock, and easier way to attract customers to get a cheaper phone (charge to bill). would suggest to buy phones outside these carriers and just get an eSIM from different networks.

No telco has an incentive to unlock a smartphone that will redirect any revenue to a local rival or international partner.

It takes a law to get any mobile phone unlocked.

Locally what I noticed is that the allure of getting a smartphone on a contract is the simpler amortization. Anyone can afford to buy a $1,000 + VAT smartphone if its $47.xx over 24 months.

The dual SIM nature of the iPhones gives a perception of choice but its really a useless feature if you replace it every end of contract.

It simply boils down to Apple only allowing a simple all or nothing solution. Carriers can't unlock just one of the sim slots.

That’s the unfortunate part of it. Apple could only just have telcos lock the eSIM and leave the physical SIM free for use. After all carriers only lock the SIM 1 during contract but otherwise leave SIM 2 free to use with another telco. Granted it’s a farily new SIM technology but still.

I guess carrier slaves like me are always screwed, lol

I am planning to upgrade my iPhone from SE to 11pro. I have esim in my SE. Is it possible for me to reuse the esim qr code to the new phone?

Actually it's best to lock the physical sim and unlock the eSim part as a better compromise. At least you could argue you're only using eSim when you travel.

But even Globe knows those roaming revenue is too good to let go. They're the only telco to not provide volume based data packages for roaming.

I have read posts about using globe esim on open-sim iPhones.

What are the conditions? Did you previously buy Globe-locked iPhone kaya may earlier esim na, na pwede gamitin sa open-sim phones?

Is it possible that I ask an esim for my existing postpaid plan and used that for an open-line iPhone?

I recently converted my globe postpaid to esim. Just bring 1 govt id on select globe stores. I was in and out after 5 mins. Scanned the qr code and it was activated.

Do note that when changing your device you will need to have a new esim qr.

Thank you very much for this reply @talk2globe kept telling me via DM that I can only get an esim if I buy an esim-capable Globe handset. Repeatedly told them about earlier posts here and they keep insisting I can't. Will go to the center instead. Thank you.

For the list of globe stores that has esim.

BTW I am using a Factory unlocked 11 pro max. Talk2globe must be smoking crack. Any phone with eSim can use their vouchers.

Weird thing happened today. My wife and I visited a globe store and requested for an esim. I have an 11 pro max from globe while she has a factory unlocked iPhone 12. Activated my esim with no problems but we can’t get hers to work. The “cellular plan” appears when we use the camera app to scan the esim qr but nothing happens when we click it. Going to “cellular” in settings, no “add cellular plan” can be found. When I take out the physical sim, the “cellular” in settings is greyed out and unclickable. We’re now back in the globe store to see what’s what. :(

edit: looks like she got a HK model which supports 2 physical sims. What I didn’t know was that units that support 2 physical sims don’t support esim. Oh well.

Would be nice if Apple would provide an error message explaining that the iPhone has 2 physical SIM slots so cannot accept eSIM.

I think if you got 2 sim slot then esim will not function, but its actually easier to use, just get another physical sim, afaik know when os is corrupt you need to input another qr for esim, and its a problem getting a new qr for an existing esim as they have to deactivate the old one then issue another 1 that bind to the account. our boss got problem even the corporate rep of globe cant do it over the call and has to return another day to do it

I agree, with every update there's a risk of soft bricking. eSim implementation in the Philippines is a hassle (QR is per device binding) when you want to move to a new phone. I do hope they streamline it and have the globeone or gigalife app issue new eSim.
