There is an open-platform alternative to Skype just launched. It can be downloaded from http://www.gizmoproject.com. It has some neat features not found in Skype. Best of all, it can connect to other VOIP networks.

    Try it out!

Just got off a call with Longbeard... works like a charm! Quality is very good, though not perfect ... but it's free!
Yes, ichat has audio support, but this thing can work with the ordinary phones if you want to call out or have someone call in...for a small small fee...

Waks, forgot I was downloading while talking to you...also connected to Skype at the same time...that might explain the noisy audio quality.

That's maybe the reason for the humming sounds, but still quite loud and clear.

Longbeard, I was talking to Waks maybe when you called...nice to know that there is voicemail when you are busy.

Ratburn, I use skype too...skype is better, but gizmo is open to other VOIP networks. Skype only allows you to talk to other Skype users and normal telephone users. Gizmo allows you to talk to Gizmo users and other VOIP users such as Vonage, etc....and also normal telephone users. Gizmo is cheaper than Skype for calling normal telephone users.

haven't tried Gizmo to make calls to a regular phone yet, but from their webpage, calls to the philippines cost ¢21.8/min (¢29.1/min to cellphone) which is more expensive than SIPphone's ¢14.5/min (¢18-18.5/min to cell). Gizmo has a more mac-like interface compared to SIPphone, though.
