Do you guys turn on your Firewall?

I'm now on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, last night I was exploring System Preferences and turned on Firewall and later set up Mail (for the first time) when the Dock froze with all the windows refusing to minimize or even move (even Expose was not reacting). I had to restart about twice but got the same hanged Dock so I turned Firewall off and reset Mail. I was thinking my Gmail account was the culprit (around 8 thousand messages). Anyone experienced the same? What's the workaround?

Also, how do you set up Mail to only get 25 new messages, just like what I did with my iPhone?

    TIA!
