One way or another you will need a dvd drive may it be an external drive or another Mac. You can install from an 8gb flash disk but you need a way to write a bootable installer disk image on it. Again you will need another machine with a dvd drive to do this. So the short answer is, you will need a dvd drive. To obtain a disk image without a dvd drive suggests illegal means.

I read you could copy the DVD over to a bootable USB drive, and install it from there. Maybe a install through another Mac is another option (Applications > Utilities > Remote Install Mac OS X.

For my suggestion you need a Mac with working DVD drive anyways.

For the USB drive method I recall the process as follows:

You have to format and partition the HDD via Disk Utility, and when you partition it set GUID in the Options.

After that you make an image of the DVD on the HDD and within Startup Disk you should be able to select to boot from the drive.

Double-check though for the complete procedure.

    Good luck!

My mac mini SuperDrive was also acting up when I tried to install, so what I did was to open the mini and clean up the insides. I blew into the SuperDrive to remove the accumulated dust over the years. After that the SuperDrive started working na ulit. That's how I got to install.

How to open a mac mini.. Might be helpful for you.
