The AirPort Extreme Enabler activates the 802.11n capability on the earlier Core 2 Duo Macs. When Apple shipped those early Core 2 Duo Macs, they were shipped with an 802.11n-capable WiFi card but the 802.11n capability was disabled and it was configured to only work as an 802.11g WiFi card. When the 802.11n was more or less locked in, Apple bundled the AirPort Extreme Enabler with the AirPort Extreme Base Station and also sold it separately for $1.99.
