Hi, was wondering if anybody could recommend a good program so that i could clone/make a mirror copy of my entire system (files, programs, locations) to a back-up harddrive/CD/DVD-RW and could periodically update it. So that i could effectively just set-up a new empty mac and everything would install itself exactly the same as my existing one. appreciated. cheers a.
Yah, Carbon Copy Cloner works great. It'll backup your entire hard disk to an external drive. You can even set it to make a bootable backup, making it very easy to restore and have your system up & running again if anything should go wrong. Just make sure to test the backup each time (check out this thread).
Try Super Duper From the site: Carbon copies. And a whole lot more. SuperDuper is the most advanced, yet easy to use disk copying program available for OS X. It can, of course, make a straight copy, or "clone" — useful when you want to move all your data from one machine to another, or do a simple backup. In moments, you can completely duplicate your boot drive to another drive, partition, or image file. In even less time, you can update an existing clone with the latest data: use Smart Update and, minutes later, your duplicate is completely up to date!
thanks a lot guys thanks a lot guys! much appreciated. now all i need is an external harddrive yes? any recommendations? or can i backup on multiple CD/DVD-RWs? thanks again cheers a.
hi, abba, we're glad your questions are being answered. for your question about external hard drives--and, indeed, for most other technical questions--please use the SEARCH function on the upper right of this page, and type in something like "external". i'm sure you'll find what you're looking for, because it's a subject that's been discussed many times and we try not to repeat things here to keep the forum tight and neat. welcome to philmug
I noticed in the CCC preferences that there is a feature to make a backup file which can be segregate (or spanned) into several chunks. So I think you will be able to make a custom restore stored on several CDs. I haven't tried it though the theory is sound.
