Hi -- I tried to do a search about this topic on the forum but came up empty, so I'm hoping someone could provide answers here instead or point me to a thread.

I'll be visiting Canada for a few weeks and then Singapore for another week. I was wondering which Apple store offers the best prices for refurb Macs: Canada or Singapore? I was looking to buy either a 2017 or 2018 13" MBP with 16GB RAM. If anyone with experience buying from these stores can chime in, that would be great.

Could you also tell me how it would work? I tried to checkout a laptop on the official Apple website for each country, but the billing option only had either CA or SG in the address field.

    Thank you!

hey amigo! good morning! unless you have a balikbayan buddy coming home anytime soon from CA or SG, i believe your best bet would be to get a refurb off of the US site. they only deliver to physical addresses within their respective country of origin (in this case the US from the US site and so on) so for this, you'd have to coordinate with one of our local couriers who has a drop off location there, say Johnny Air.

question is, would it be worth it with the shipping expense tacked on? do remember that if you buy it from CA, you'd have to tack on around 9% - 13% for tax (varies depending on the province) on top of the MSRP versus the total amount you'd be paying if you were to simply order it locally from store.apple.com/ph where VAT is already inclusive. an alternative would be is to get one locally from the PH site, pre-configured with 16GB RAM on an educational discount which if i'm not mistaken gives you around 5% off. for Singapore, you have the option to pick-up the item from the Apple store.

Now, for the specific model you need, it will be a bit difficult as the models come and go from the Apple store

My only concern is that I'm not sure how you'll avail of Singapore's tax refund

in the case of apple singapore, online purchases are NOT subject to tax refunds. this may only be enjoyed when purchasing from a physical store once you're in town.

perhaps, for non-refurbished purchases, you might want to consider chatting with an apple online specialist to discuss about the model + specs that matches your preferences and check if it can be arranged to have it picked up at the apple orchard store during your visit.

^ yeah, might be worth a try but basing on my experience, at least in Japan, a refurb delivery / pick-up at the local Apple store isn't something they accommodate. nonetheless, it's worth a shot. also, you might want to add this notification on your phone. i tried it out and it does seem to mirror stuff in real time.

Hello! Finally got the chance to check the thread again.

@pochiman I have family in Canada, so store pickup or delivery shouldn't be a problem, should it? I'll be there physically anyway, so I can just take it home myself. I am subscribed to refurb-tracker too :D Even with taxes, the model I'm interested in (2018/13"/16GB/256GB) is still a little over CAD2500. In Singapore the same model is about SGD2440. Also, yeah, I did read that online purchases in Singapore didn't quality for tax refund so I took that into account as well.

OMG I JUST ANSWERED MY OWN QUESTION. Sorry if this seemed like a stupid post. I was honestly confused for a time and am only just seeing the light.

Anyway: despite the $100 difference, I might choose to buy from Canada. I'll be there for four weeks, so plenty enough time to see the model I want restocked. I've been following refurb-tracker for some time now and it looks like they regularly restock. Getting it from Singapore might be iffy since I'll only be there for a week and based on refurb-tracker they don't get restocked as often.
