Hello. I think I can conclude that the Combo Drive of my iBook needs replacement or repair due to the following reasons that happen chronologically: 1. A DVD got stuck inside it and it took around 6 restarts to get it out.... 2. Tried putting a CD in after the DVD got ejected, would not go in... 3. Restarted iBook, Combo Drive made a loud clicking sound, ran and went quiet... 4. Put a CD in, Combo Drive accepted it BUT it was not recognized by the iBook (no icon on desktop, "no recorder found" in Toast and no icon in Disk Utility) and the CD won't eject... (guess it's gonna take 20 tries to get it out) I bought this in the U.S. 7 months ago and I still have the receipt (which I'm sure is needed to avail of the one year warranty). Do I simply show this receipt to Ynzal and they will service my iBook and replace the drive for free? I'm assuming I'll be paying labor costs though... Thanks for the help guys! P.S. Sorry for the wrong spelling in the title; Comco = Combo
Re: Busted ComcoDrive, 1 Year Warranty and Ynzal have you tried bringing it to the Apple Store? the warranty should be valid and i think they can also check when the ibook was actually purchased even without the receipt. but since you have a copy of it, it will come in handy when you bring it with you
Re: Busted ComcoDrive, 1 Year Warranty and Ynzal Apple will repair it free of charge. I bought my powerbook in CA last May 2004 and had it repaired May 2005 (within the one year warranty). No charge and had my HD replaced. You can just show you receipt and they can check the validity of the warranty.
Since your iBook is still under warranty, it'll be completely free of charge for you. No need to even pay for labor. Also, I edited your the thread title for you.
I've said in the past, if your portable was NOT purchased locally, be prepared for longer repair estimates. Portables puchased in-country get a faster turnaround. So if you want to save yourself the aggravation, take the unit to Ynzal and have it diagnosed. Once they verify the drive is busted, DON'T leave it. Ask them to call you IF and WHEN the parts arrive in the country already. This should save you a lot of sleepness nights longing for your portable since it still works without the optical drive.
Okay, thanks for the responses and tips guys. Really appreciate it berrybianka, renzo, Patrick and Dave. Will be visiting a service center soon.
Update: Brought my iBook in today and Nomer took out the drive and told me that Ynzal will call when the replacement arrives. Good dealing with Val and Nomer at Ynzal, hope they keep it up. Thanks again for the advice guys.
I had a similar problem before (a deformed CD got stucked) and they didn't charge me any single cent to think that I didn't even bought my unit from them. They also helped me restore my data when my ibook HD went kaput all in sudden, again for FREE!
I'm ynzal now. Is your unit under warranty? They say that if it's from abroad they need the proof of purchase. My new combo dirve is being attached now, woohoo! Ynzal's great!
I think it would also help if you give them a call. They were asking me things like "where was it purchased?" and "What's the problem?" and other relevant questions... 4137574 4137578 ynzal.com
i think mine got busted today also. inserted a cd and i can't remove it anymore. and i can't do anything with the ibook also cos the pointer turned into the rainbow icon. anyway, you think i can have it replaced with a SUPER drive instead of a COMBO drive, and just pay extra??
it would depend if your model supports superdrive... i have the same predicament with my powerbook... have to use firewire from my imac....
@fidel, had to bring this thread up again. did they say what was wrong with your drive? i have an ibook that is malfunctioning the same way, sounds like the bezel of the drive blocks the CD. also, i was not happy with my last repair at ynzal. thanks.
I don't recall them telling me what exactly went wrong but my problem was that the CD inside would not eject. My experience with them has always been a good one though. Sorry to hear about yours.
