I seriously considered doing the same thing.. but when I asked my wife for her opinion, she said: are you nuts? ha ha. but we'll see. I might still give in one of these days.

I think you also need to use an HK Apple ID.
Or maybe try changing your country in settings to HK.

We have the same sentiment. When I got my AW3, it has been months before i use my other watches until i decided to sell it. Now that i have AW4 few weeks back, I have never worn any of my other watches again to date... they are now all in the watch compartment jealous of AW4.

Mm....it could be because Apple has implemented new measures to validate your actual location via the Telco geolocation data instead of where it was purchased. There’s at least two articles regarding this new procedure contained in the latest version of Watch OS and iOS.

In other words, Apple will check that your Hong Kong Series 4 is located in HK. You need to be in HK to activate.

The info could be a red herring. Keep us updated if you succeed in activating ECG. Suggest changing your country to HK. Another is to use a VPN to spoof your location.

You are right. I did try the following:
    1. Turned off location services, used VPN and connected to an HK server, changed my regional settings on both phone and watch to HK. No dice.
    2. Then, tried putting the phone in airplane mode and just connecting via WiFi and bluetooth. Still VPN connected via HK server. I got a prompt while activating to turn off airplane mode and have a working SIM card.

So, yeah, ecg can only be activated and used where it is supported. The lock down they implemented during the initial release was definitely enhanced. Though surprisingly if you were able to activate a US purchased Apple Watch at launch, updating to the 5.2 watchOS didn’t impact the usage of ecg even if you’re not in the US.

Mm...any US-bought Watch Series 4 (owner), with ECG activated here in PH updated to the latest Watch OS (5.2)?? Is your ECG still functioning? Tia.

Mm...super! So, it is safe to say that the new ECG lock-down procedure is for Watch Series 4 bought after the release of Watch OS 5.2.

So if I ask a relative to purchase a Series 4 AW from the US and have her activate it using her Apple ID (hence activating the ECG function), would the ECG function still work after bringing it over here and I pair it with my iPhone which is using my PH Apple ID (and of course connected to a local telco)?

Mm...if he/she is a trusted relative, have it activated over there with your own Apple ID, not hers. From what I understand, the new security protocol uses geolocation provided by a USA simcard (or a simcard in the authorized countries).

The problem is a new pairing. The Watch needs to be unpaired from hers and then paired with your iPhone....,meaning you will be starting from scratch....therefore, you will need to go through the ECG location check roadblock. If so, it may not be a good idea to buy a US Series 4 now. If so, your next option is to buy it yourself in HK where ECG is now permitted and then pair it there with your iPhone and your Apple ID. Just use a prepaid HK simcard for the geolocation check.

Got it. While I do trust her, I still won't let anybody login my Apple ID so I guess letting her activate it with my ID is out of the question. Thanks for the swift reply
