The lack of cellular support for the local Apple watches is what's holding me back from getting one. Any insiders know if there's any development (especially we have eSIM now and we only lack VoLTE) with Globe? I'd be happy to open a new Apple Watch line with Globe but too bad it doesn't exist.. yet
As been said before, if you are the type who always has your phone or are around Wifi access most of the day, the wifi only Apple Watch Series 4 does a pretty fine job. I just moved up from a Series 2 Apple Watch which wasn't as effective as the newest model. I get more text messages than I do cellular phone calls, so now I leave my iPhone 7 plus in my room most of the time, since I am always wearing my watch around my building and have my Macbook Pro to work on. I can take my calls and get my messages on the watch or laptop without skipping a beat since my office is only one floor below my bedroom and wifi coverage is fine. Even now that I am more than 12 floors below working in my store, my iPhone is still in my room and my Apple Watch serves me well while I work on my laptop. If I have to go out, the iPad Pro and iPhone 7 plus are a handy working duo augmented by the watch.
I did try out the watch before I sold it immediately after. I mostly used the watch while running or biking. While it’s perfect for tracking those two activities— it’s useless for communication. Especially long rides that take 3-4 hours, it’d be really handy to wear a watch than to lug around a phone.
When Apple decides its time... Then Globe will have it I can just imagine Tim Cook answering this question... "When we feel that the local telco can provide the premium experience our users deserve, then we can activate the necessary features"
Will the apple watch received sms and phone calls even if it is out of bluetooth range of the paired iphone as long as they are on the same wifi network?
As I posted above, series 4 AW will receive SMS and cellular calls even on a different WiFi network. That wasn’t true for my series 2 AW.
Hi Everyone, I'm a little sad to see that this thread hasn't had a new post since February. So I'll be home for a few months, and was wondering how I could go about setting up my Apple Watch S4 to make cellular calls even if my phone is at home. Do the major networks like Globe or Smart even support it to begin with? Tried googling and couldn't find a definitive answer. Thanks guys!
^Currently, eSIM on the Apple Watch S4 still isn't supported by any of the telcos here. It's taken them longer than expected.
Gie from Globe clarified that Globe would be offering Apple Watch as a bundle on their postpaid plans but haven’t heard from Globe since then.
Ah yeah well. Is the technology that hard to get that neither of the big telcos is able to support it? Not like people don’t want to pay for the service?!
I saw this infographic on Globe's website and they have Apple Watch on their supported devices list as of July 2019. Their FAQ also mentions that you can pair your mobile number on a "smartwatch."
Hopefully they official start supporting it on the S5. Even though I wont be upgrading my watch this year, it's nice to know that my next upgrade I can now opt for the cellular version.
Called Globe customer service and they said that Apple Watch LTE support has not yet been rolled out due to lack of demand. Ok. That makes sense since the apple LTE watches are only available via the grey market and the public has yet to gain local marketshare of LTE capable wearables.
Okay. I wonder if it will cost money for Globe to implement support for Apple Watch. Or does it require some level of partnership with Apple in order for them to bring the Apple watch cellular models to the PH. And correct me if I’m wrong most carriers would charge additional fee as well for Apple watch support right? So it might actually be an additional revenue for the carriers. My guess is it’s not really about the lack of demand but rather the lack of Apple official support.
But grey market AWs shouldn't be compatible at all. Tech limitations force each Apple Watch to be locked to the carrier they're on.
