i'm very disappointed that they did not include a different way of browsing the catalog of "my movies", i thought they would include a grid style view like in itunes. :(

and of course this update comes a day after i installed xbmc/boxee on my apple tv. :)

    @aldwin..

are you going to reinstall boxee? I didn't install boxee though, I just want the USB for external drive. Will wait for awkward's take on this new update.

just finished updating my ATV to 2.2. Some notes:

    1. Download took approximately 3 hours (should be shorter with a faster dsl connection).
    2. After downloading, you are given the option to update immediately or postpone it.
    3. Installation took less than 5 minutes.
    4. During the download, ATV will show a progress bar (useful for feedback).

Finally, HD TV direct from the revamped ATV menu:

Apple added "Standby" button on the menu (so no need to extended press the remote's play/pause button to achieve the same):

and itunes genius has been integrated as well:

Overall - I think the update is not ground-breaking but it refreshes the ATV to keep up with the latest that iTunes has to offer. There are some security updates as well to keep ATV safer than ever. Finally, for ATV owners who intend to update to the latest, I suggest you finish any downloads in progress first before going through the process. Otherwise, you have to restart your downloads again. I am reporting no issues at all with this update to our ATV.

i heard the xbmc/boxee patchstick still works with 2.2

    http://blog.boxee.tv/2008/10/03/xbmcboxee-works-with-apple-tv-ver-22/

i'm not sure if i'll reinstall them though, their interface is so much better, especially xbmc with aeon theme aplied, but there still are a few glitches, so i'll probably stay on the default software for now.

good luck on installing the usb patch though, hope it goes smoothly. :)

ironic for you to be disappointed, considering that itunes "stole" its grid view from apple tv! ;)

just update mine now (mine took about 10-12 minutes to download; 3 minutes to update)

am not a bit surprised at how incremental the update is. then again, remember apple tv 1.0? it relied on itunes too for its downloads, which is how hdtv shows were downloaded prior to this upgrade. so that's a 1.0 feature trapped in a 2.1 box, but finally gained full independence in this v2.2 release.

and finally, 2.2 brought some measure of consistency tothe user interface. i remember "my movies" was at the bottom of the movie navigation heap, while "my music" was at the top of the music section, which may be minor, save for the anal ui designer in me. ;)

is "standby" for people who cannot be bothered to hold the play button for two seconds? or is it for people who can't wait two seconds for their apple tv to wake up? :D

yeah, It was surprising that it took so long but it just so happened that I had 6 downloads in queue and I did not bother to pause, thinking that the update process would preserve my downloads in progress after the update. So "Empire of the Sun" was at 59% already when my ATV went through the reboot process and, lo and behold, it was gone so I had to start from scratch.

Of course, another contributory factor is my jurassic DSL connection thanks to Smartbro but it does have an unexpected benefit: it keeps me from rapidly depleting my itunes U.S. account.

exactly, appletv had that view since 1.0 (trailers if I remember correctly) , then they made it the default way of browsing the store in 2.0, it made a comeback on trailers view a few software updates ago. how come they wouldn't include that view in other parts of their menu system, the "list" clearly does not work well when browsing through hundreds of movies.

Anyways, browsing the catalog using iphone + AppleTv would suffice for now.

You need to hack your ATV to play other video files. Check AwkwardTV.
