For as compelling as Apple’s flagship iPhone models are, consumers still seem to be flocking towards the company’s more budget-oriented devices. According to a new report from Counterpoint Research (via Patently Apple), the top-selling iPhone in every single quarter throughout 2019 has been Apple’s iPhone XR. What’s more, the iPhone XR has been the top-selling iPhone model in every quarter since it launched, with the September 2018 quarter being the lone exception.

Even beyond Apple, the research found that the iPhone XR was the most popular smartphone model across all brands throughout the entire year. During the third quarter of 2019, for example, the top 5 selling smartphone models on a global basis were the iPhone XR, the Samsung Galaxy A10, the Galaxy A50, the Oppo A9, and the iPhone 11.

On a market share basis, the iPhone XR accounted for 3% of global smartphone sales while the iPhone 11 accounted for 1.6% of global iPhone sales.

It’s certainly interesting that none of Samsung’s flagships managed to crack the top ten, though a few of their more wallet-friendly devices managed to make an appearance.

While this data with respect to the iPhone XR may come as a bit of a surprise, it shines a light on the shifting dynamics of the smartphone market. With generous carrier subsidies now nothing more than a distant memory, it’s clear that most consumers are eager to enjoy Apple’s latest and greatest technologies but are hesitant to spend upwards of $1,000 on a flagship device like the iPhone 11 Pro.

With this in mind, it’s no wonder that Apple is planning to introduce an even more affordable iPhone model this year. While folks were pining for an iPhone SE 2, rumor has it that Apple will introduce an iPhone 9 for as low as $399. The rumored device is said to boast Touch ID and will incorporate a 4.7-inch display.

    64GB iPhone Xr is $599
    64GB iPhone 11 is $699

Mm...get the Apple Card. Buy the iPhone 11 Pro Max and pay in 24 months....interest free. That makes the iPhone Pro Max affordable.

I like the Xr.....but it is a toy compared to the 11 Pro Max. It is not for me.

    menos na menos.

But there is nothing wrong with Xr starter phones and with global smartphone sales stagnating, Apple may have no choice but to push for cheaper iPhones. From Apple’s perspective, the more people who buy iPhones means the more people will subscribe to Apple’s arsenal of services. More subscribers = more profits.

    I like that strategy.

In terms of revenues, Apple owns 1 dollar for every 3, worldwide. And 2 dollars in net profit for every 3 dollars, worldwide. So that means if Apple decides to flood the market with even cheaper iPhones, it is goodbye to a lot of Android manufacturers. Apple owns the top, will probably own the middle markets and leaving the Androids with the low or no profit segment of the market, really as crumbs to the rest of the industry.

I want Apple to get $4 out of every $5 net profit of any smartphone sold per quarter.

32GB iPhone 8 is $449 so hoping to see this happen next year through a cheaper iPhone SE replacement priced at below $400.

This would be the preferred handset of a lot of organizations
