Thanks. More concerned about turning it on and off - using the app/voice assistant AND light switch. Muscle memory dictates that you turn it off using the light switch when you leave the room, and it usually takes awhile for the app to respond and do the action. The Smart Light Switch might be the answer, though, but it adds another always-on device drawing electricity. Meralco loves these.
For the absolute convenience it gives you, being able to turn on/off the lights intuitively using either the physical switch or the app, I think a few extra standby Watts would be worth it. It wouldn't amount to much anyway. How many switches do you think you'll need? Let's maybe do some math.... assuming you have 25 'plates' of wall switches all around the house, (a plate being either 1, 2-gang, or 3-gang switch), if a plate has a parasitic power consumption of 1 Watt (worst-case), that's a total of 25 Watts for the whole house. 25 W x 24 hours x 30 days gives us 18 kWh of consumption per month. Now, if we use a worst-case-scenario gross Meralco rate of P15 per kWH, you will just have to pay an additional P270 on top of what you're currently paying. Again, these are worst-case conditions. If we use a more realistic parasitic power draw and a more accurate electricity rate (0.7W per switch and a gross rate of P10.5 / kWh), you'll only be spending P132 on top. So to be able to afford the convenience of a smart switch, you'll just be spending "Spotify Premium money" (P129). It's really not that much. You can further lower the cost by just deploying smart switches in areas where they are absolutely needed (ie. common areas, living areas, dining, bedrooms, hallways, etc.) and probably NOT in storage rooms or even to some extent, bathrooms or toilets. EDIT: Sonoff switches, granted they will need more work than a fully-assembled 'plate' light switch, can be hacked so that the standby power can be brought down from 0.7W to 0.2W. In a month, that'll be just under P40 added to your bill.
+1 on this. Scheduled lighting is the most logical benefit of smart switches. (I have 3 scheduled lighting) Works 98% of the time (2% either PLDT or Device became unresponsive), mostly fails when I'm at home so a quick unplug/plug should do the trick. Another use case is not having to stand up and turn ON/OFF the fan/lights for those mornings where you are just not up for it.
Does anyone know a smart switch that can be a replacement for my regular switch so that I can control my ceiling fan with Alexa? I have one with single switch that turns on the fan and another with triple switch. Hope I was able to explain it clearly. Thank you!
Alexa Will Lose Her Voice in Amazon’s Super Bowl Ad. Below is just a teaser. If you read between the lines, this could mean a new voice or voices to choose from, more supported languages, or they could be coming out with a smarter Alexa 2.0. OT: Jeff Bezos looks like a nerdy version of Kevin Spacey.
Currently have multiple Echos set up over the house. An Echo Show for the living room, a couple of the new standalone Echos for the rooms, and some Dots scattered in places with speakers already. Only recently did we add the TP Link smart plugs to start controlling some basic appliances. Tempted to get the Sensibo.. These are great since we use the intercom feature a lot. One of the people in our household is visually impaired and getting songs/news on demand via voice was a great new experience for her.
