I just tried this out at my folks' place and I got instant results. My web browsing is significantly faster. I'll try it out tonight and see what happens there.

Check it out, there are no strings attached--no signups, no fees, no ads, no fuss, nothing. All it takes is for you to punch in their two DNS nameservers into your network prefs or router's settings and you're good to go. It only takes two minutes, and anyone can do it. Results are instant (at least for me it was).

I won't post the DNS addresses here. It's only fair that you get it from their website: OpenDNS.com

Please reply here and share your experiences.

    Enjoy!

(I know this was mentioned in a couple of threads before, but I believe this tip deserves its own thread)

OpenDNS. Been using this service for quite a while now, 2 or 3 months I believe.

    Have fun! :D

kalirayacs, please proceed to www.opendns.com, everything you need to know is there. All you have to do is read, and it's not a lot of reading too. Thanks.

Put it in my router. Hopefully their service is more reliable than Globeline's DNS servers which seem to go down once in a while.

it worked for me!!! the curious thing is that speedometer tests don't indicate the higher speed, but it is obvious to me that my connection is now much faster. my home connection used to crawl at certain hours (like right now) but now i'm surfing with ease.

Re: A faster internet, for FREE: OpenDNS

Put simply, DNS is like a phone directory, with the name of the site (i.e. www.site.com) and the corresponding IP address (i.e. 1.2.3.4). The faster the DNS server responds, the faster you can be directed and connect to a site, but it doesn't make your actual transfer speeds faster. So, since the DNS servers of OpenDNS respond quickly, you might connect to sites much faster than you normally would, but your actual download speed will not change :)
