Since Facebook is finally allowing us to (easily) share 360 photos... This thread for 360 Cameras... Like the Ricoh Theta, LG 360 Cam, Samsung's Gear 360 and Nikon's KeyMission 360
Wow. I didn't realize there already are consumer 360-degree cameras. But I don't know... Personally, I can only look at so many 360-degree photos. After a while, the fun dies out. I wonder how long this will be a trend.
For convenience I'd get the a dedicated 360 camera but if you want it free then the Google Camera app for Android and Google Street View app for iOS are already good enough for stills. If you want 360 video then you need to buy the above mentioned 360 cameras.
I was actually playing with the Gear 360 yesterday at the Samsung Store, took a flyer and decided to start this thread... Ricoh Theta now has its second gen (Theta S), LG, Samsung and Nikon have their first gen devices this year... I've decided to wait for the 2nd Gen Gear 360. My family knows I love to take 360 photos during our vacations. 1st Gen devices doesn't have the resolution of today's camera phones, but at least you can pan the photo to appreciate the entire moment it was taken. (hopefully the second gen devices get a better resolution) + you get the benefit of 360 videos for all those theme park rides (Gear 360 is "splash proof") *** lesson learned... 360 photos when imported to iPhoto loses it's 360-ness
I ordered the LG 360 over the Theta S since its newer Waiting for delivery by noon.. question, can we share 360 photos and paste it here? (or other forums) or it can be shared only via FB/Twitter/Flickr?
I have the LG 360 Cam and have only actually started using it in the last couple of days. It's really fun and easy to use and creates very interesting images. We are currently apartment-hunting and I found it really useful the other night taking photos of units we visited and reviewing them later, going through full views of the spaces/rooms. Sharing 360 images is another matter. The LG 360 Cam Manager (app used to connect to the camera, act as remote shutter, view gallery, download images to your phone memory, etc.) is Android (of course) and iOS compatible. HOWEVER, uploading 360 images to Facebook using any mobile other than the LG G5 does not result in 360 VR images, at least in my experience. I initially tried uploading using an iPhone 6s and an S7 Edge, and in both cases, uploads resulted in flat 2D (distorted) images. Switching to LG G5 solved the issue. Oh, and this is after updating the cam's software pala (download LG Bridge, connect the cam via the USB-C cable to your mac or pac, then click on "software update"--as a side note, the update included "Manual Mode" and a few other settings although to be honest, I don't recall if they were there to begin with). So there, I hope future updates (to the cam or to the 360 Cam Manager app) fixes this issue.
Got mine earlier this afternoon.. and im happy with it @kiyobi I agree! at first I had a hard time using the iOS App that came with it, very buggy and I found out that the photos shared using it does not appear as 3D/360 when displayed by facebook. I did some research and it seems the iOS App is not retaining the file metadata thus facebook will not recognize it as a 360 photo (it explained why it was uploaded as a distorted panoramic photo instead of 3D). Anyways what I did was edit the metadata using exif editor and saved the maker as "LG Electronics" and model as "LG 360-R150", "LG-360-R150" etc.. lo and behold it didn't work. I was so frustrated that I renamed it "RICOH" and "RICOH THETA S" out of sheer disgust but guess what? It worked! Im enjoying my 360 life now
^ It seems FB is having a hard time detecting LG metadata.. its just so ironic that before I decided to get the LG I was deadset on getting the Theta S even with the steep price tag. Atleast now I get to have a Theta S, even on the metadata side. anyways, how about video? I tried the 360 video but haven't tried uploading it to youtube yet.. any bugs on the video side?
Haven't tried sharing/uploading 360 videos yet so can't comment. I'm not sure if it's FB that has an issue detecting LG metadata. I think its the app (360 Cam Manager) because I was able to directly upload to FB (without any editing, just straightaway clicking the "share" button) successfully using the LG G5.
AFAIK utility apps only for smartphones (Android/iOS) and the unit only comes with a manual.. there is no PC/Mac software for the LG 360. yep! I did some research and it seems the culprit is indeed the LG 360 app for iOS.. hope they release an update soon as its very tedious to always edit every photo that I want to share.
Before I invest in a professional (multi-cam) set-up, I want to play around with a consumer set-up first, and get familiar with the workflow. I have seen YouTube videos on how to edit/splice together different 360 videos, which is what I am interested in—to upload an edited (for optimal storytelling) a sequence of 360-video clips. Question is: Which 360 cameras produce files that are editable using Final Cut Pro X? Keep the tips/hacks coming, fellas. I hope to contribute soon too. Still in research phase. Cheers!
i came across an iOS app that allows taking and posting of 360 videos "Photonomie", though the resulting output is a bit low quality at the moment.
I already tried the video.. it wont upload/play as 360 unless you inject metadata in it too. We need a metadata tool for video which can be downloaded here: https://github.com/google/spatial-media/releases/download/v2.0/360.Video.Metadata.Tool.mac.zip Before uploading to YouTube be sure to use that tool first, just check the "My video is spherical" and save as then after that you can upload it to YouTube. Your video wont play as 360 just yet after uploading (it will play but as a stretched panorama), YouTube needs time to encode the 360 feature which will take time that will depend on the length of the video (in my case around 3-5 minutes encoding for a 1 minute clip). After that refresh the video, should be 360 already. enjoy!
It seems there is a desktop application already: http://www.lg.com/us/support-product/lg-LGR105.AVRZTS
