Unlike macOS Catalina, which supported every standard configuration Mac that Mojave supported, Big Sur drops support for various Macs released in 2012 and 2013. Big Sur runs on the following Macs:

    ========

Looks like my 2012 iMac is up to macOS Catalina. What's important is that it receives Apple security updates until at least 2024.

That’s good to hear. How is it in daily use? I’ve seen some commenters on Reddit say that it runs pretty well for a developer beta. Thinking that I’ll probably try it once the public beta program goes live.

At the WWDC 2005 keynote Steve Jobs mentioned that Mac OS X (macOS) was supposed to be good for 20 years. By next year it will be 20 years since Mac OS X 10.0.

Another thing mentioned was that from year 2000 Mac OS X has been crossplatform by design.

I would not be surprised if Apple did the same since 2015 with the rumored Skylake problems came about forcing Apple to reevaluate their relationship with Intel.

As an added bonus here's the 2018 interview of Microsoft's Roz Ho who was at WWDC 2005 to introduce the first and only Microsoft Office Universal Binary

Like I noted in another thread, I installed it and tried it for a few hours but reverted to Catalina. Too buggy (of course, since it's a beta)--missing menu bar icons, plus ugly system font and icons (at least for me). Does feel pretty fast, though.

Best practice would be to wait a few months after a point release of Big Sur before upgrading.

BDO customers who upgraded to iOS 14 within the first 24 of public release could not get their banking app to work.

oh boy this BDO thing adds a negative impression to their system. I thought their theme "We find Ways" are their mindset but it looks like they just want us to be tricked...

Not BDO's fault for being that conservative with bank security.

Other banking apps appear to allow any new version of iOS to work with.

I see the design philosophy of each but in hindsight this is a new one for me.

I don't think they're being conservative with bank security. They didn't update their app for the past 10 months nga.

I keep getting an error when trying to download the update. looks like Apple's servers are all still clogged up or something

I’ve decided to update my Macs to Big Sur and iPad and iPhone to iOS 14 after New Year’s Day.

this is to give Apple and 3rd party devs time to resolve any major or minor bugs

Same here. I've already retried several times. I might be causing unnecessary writes to the SSD because of this so I'm stopping now.

Apple should have pushed the update in waves to avoid this. I just updated my Windows 10 PC to 20H2 and while the update was pushed to my PC about a month after it was released, it all went smoothly.
