This might shed some light on what Ming-Chi Kuo's statement really meant. https://daringfireball.net/2018/01/iphone_x_one_year TL;DR Think 5 years ago when the iPhone 5 was "discontinued" in favor of the 5s as the next flagship and the 5c being the budget option. It's the same thing - a newer, better version will replace the X as the flagship, and a new, cheaper variant will be introduced as the budget option. It just means that the X won't be sold as next year's "budget option", but these articles are quoting Kuo's statement out of context and blowing things out of proportion by using terms like "killed" or "cancelled".
Apple is doing a reverse psychology on the iPX...that’s the way to make people be curious about why the X isn’t that much of a deal...see sales move slightly higher after that pronouncement (which TC is now saying its been misinterpreted)... Bright boys there...
Prolly a marketing strategy? People may think that this will be the perfect time to purchase an iPhone X since it will eventually be discontinued prematurely. Its the first gen/anniversary phone anyway, and most likely become a "collector" phone in the long run. Not sure though, but I really can't see the reason and thought behind its early demise considering its doing quite pretty well I assume.
I personally didn't think that the iPhone X was meant as a regular iPhone in the lineup because there was the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus which continued the regular cadence of annual updates of the model. The X was kind of like a special edition to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. A peek-of-things-to-come kind of device for the Apple faithful. Kuo did mention that there would be two (or even three) new iPhones this year with the "regular" and "plus" combination as in years past but based on the X. It would make sense for Apple then to cease production of the X this year to give way to the two new models. I honestly don't know how this would affect the resale value of the X but if these reports are true it would make the X line even more valuable for collectors because of its limited run and for what it represents. I really love my iPhone X and embrace all the new things that Apple has brought to the UX.
As far as I know, there's no way you can select which stuff to restore from an iTunes backup/restore process. It's gonna be all or nothing. But if you do want to transfer just your photos and videos, I can suggest you just transfer them via AirDrop. I think even if you've got a couple hundred pics/vids, it still wouldn't be too complicated to do and may just take some time if it's really a lot. As for other data like contacts and notes, sync them to your iCloud then the same will be transferred once you logon to your iCloud account on the X And it's also good practice to not reset/erase your old phone until you're 100% sure the new one has been setup and all the old data has been completely restored. Even if you do have the backup data on iTunes, it still helps to have your old iPhone still up and running in case you have to re-do your restore/transfer on the new one Hope this helps
Do you think Apple will revert back to the series and continue on with an iPhone 9/9 Plus as its next release?
^that’s possible, also they might drop it altogether and just call it iphone (2018) and iphone plus (2018)
i'm inclining towards this as well. i'm thinking the X will be the last numbered iPhone as a tribute to 10 years of iphone. it also messes up the continuity between model numbers, and they wouldn't want to announce the iphones 9-11 in September (read this joke on reddit haha).
So. I jumped the gun and got an X. Initially I wanted to get an SE since I didn't really need another phone then. I've also posted my reasons somewhere in another thread but tl;dr I want something I can hold with my small hands and don't need the extra features. But plans changed and now I'll need a separate phone as I need to wean off of my 6s (work reason). Between an 8 and an X (no plus for me cos... see above), I opted for X. Of course, latest and greatest. First impressions: – Was really looking forward to the bigger screen; bigger than 8 Plus' but with smaller overall form factor. Also, the all-screen – nevermind the notch – concept got me sold. But when I finally held it for more than a few hours, I am realizing that the black borders are still too thick so it's not really an all-screen phone yet. Here's to having a truly all-screen – no notch and borders – in the next 2 years. – Was really looking forward to the magical experience of just picking up the phone, swiping it up and, voila, there's your home screen. In practice, meh. Face ID is still slow to catch up to your swipe. It doesn't work for me when the phone's flat on the table and I'm just facing it at a right angle. When I'm lying down sideways, didn't work for me about 80% of the time. Lastly, in regular cases where my face is right in front of the screen (about a feet or 2 away), it fails about 40% of the time and requires me to enter my passcode. That said, tip to new users: use a simple passcode. – Where it really shines is when you get a notification like an SMS. When you look at your screen, the notification just magically reveals more details as it unlocks through Face ID without any other intervention from you. Wow, Apple at its best! – For movie-watching, I'm on Netflix 85% of the time. The app or most of the content in it don't support full screen and that's a let down for me. Amazon Video though does support it. Was also looking forward to HDR on my iTunes bought movies but... PH's internet speeds. – Putting on a tempered-glass covering on the front lessens the end-to-edge delightful feel of the screen. Rubbing your finger from the edge to the center of the screen to activate certain gestures is no longer as pleasurable as it is without the screen protector. – This is my 1st more-than–16GB phone and having 64 GB is just a relief! This is the best "feature"... and it's a little disappointing to have a best feature that could have been easily provided nowadays by just any other phone out there. – My wife and kids are enjoying animoji. Someone needs to develop a separate app for that. – The overall feel though is unmistakably Apple. It's the glass and steel that gives that premium feel. The weight reminds you of a premium device like a, say, Rolex watch. And I am glad I picked silver instead of space gray because it is much more elegant at least in my perspective.
I doubt that the notch will disappear soon, perhaps until they adopt the under the glass cameras. Also, I prefer the X's borders (no chin, just the notch), than the other phones. The screens the bleed on the edge are pretty, until you start holding it, which is when your fingers tend to block them, like a border. Facing the camera at 90 degree angle definitely won't work, unless you have a lens that covers 180 degrees! It works even if you don't look at the cameras straight on, but definitely not at right angles. As for the 40% failure, FaceID learns, so that experience might just be growing pains. When it fails and you enter your passcode immediately, it learns and adjusts. And please, do not use a simple passcode if you put high value on your phone's data security. Otherwise, just use 1234. Does this work even at right angles? It is not its best feature, IMHO. 64GB is now entry-level storage for most, but the X comes in 256GB models, too. I don't store a lot of data on the phone, and I use iCloud heavily, so my 64GB is plenty. YMMV. Same here! Enjoy the X, just like the rest of us.
Simple meaning just the 6-digit variety (not 4) which is good enough for a personal device. Instead of the 8-character ones with caps, numbers, punctuation – oh man, one can go crazy each. time. face ID. fails.
With X, there's such a thing as holding it too close, unfortunately. Netflix does support full screen, just double tap on the content you're watching, same with any safari or iTunes Movies. Youtube OTOH requires that you pinch out since double tap is reserved for 10s skips.
Dude, this made my day. Thanks! FWIW, rounded corners on movies and shows are much elegant to look at vs the sharp rectangles. Or maybe because this experience is still new. Whatever, i love it.
My iPx gave a "FaceID has been disabled" error message this morning, I immediately have it checked in BTB, I will know in 5 days if it is a hardware problem. Anyone having the same problem?
Interaction with iPhone X software interface is my best experience so far on Mobile. Next is Oxygen os of OnePlus. Android should copy iPhone X gestures Is that great.
Also got the X after 4 years of waiting!! Kudos to my faithful iphone 5S for being such a trooper after 2 battery replacements and sticking with with iOS 9. Am still using the 5S for my secondary line and still works like a charm. The X for me has been an awesome experience so far.... Face ID is fantastic! Gets it 99% of the time as long as it's right across my face at the right angle. I just noticed that it slowed down a bit after 2 weeks of use, or maybe I'm just so used to it that i'm expecting it to unlock faster. Not missing the home button too as swiping up for Home Screen is so much faster. Only thing that bugs me is the closing of apps as it now requires 3 steps. hopefully they fix it on the next iOS update.
Same here. Wish there's a close all app button once you long press the tabs instead of swiping up each app one by one.
I still use my iP 6s and it's funny I sometimes swipe up on that phone to go back to the home screen.
The recent earnings call pegged average price per unit sold at $796, up from $690 a year before. iPhone X (and 8 Plus) is really accounting for the increase in average sales. One last trick is to provide X Plus and I'm not sure how Apple will keep the momentum of increasing average unit price after that though.
