What does "Broadband" mean?, Posted 02-09-2010, 01:24 AM #1
i'm not really well-versed when it comes to, how do should i call it, internet connection jargons (?), so i do get confused with the whole 3G-4G-Broadband-DSL topic. I read the thread on Wi-Tribe because i saw their ads too and i got interested (and even had my own little comment), but i just got lost when i continued. could you guys help me understand these different internet connections? like what do they mean/stand for, how are they different, what is good for what, etc. thanks in advance. really appreciate it.

there's always Wiki to help you wade through the jargon.....but to simplify:

1. think of broadband as a highway on the internet....3G (3rd Generation) is like a two-lane provincial highway while 4G (4th Generation) is the NLEX. The key is speed. The bigger the highway, the faster the traffic will flow. Same thing with 3G and 4G.

2. DSL is wired connection to the internet, meaning data to and from the internet flows through the telephone cable in your house. Wifi broadband, like Wi-Tribe, is wireless connection to the internet, meaning data to and from the interet flows through the antenna. Which one is better? It doesn't matter how you are connected (wired or wireless). Again, the key is speed.

I think the best way to avoid getting confused is to disregard the acronyms/jargon and focus on what you need, which is usually based on speed.

The key questions to ask if you are trying to decide on what to get:
1. What will I use it for? browsing, email, chat, facebook? 512 to 1 Mbps should work out ok. youtube, video downloads, torrents, online games? faster speeds will help (1.5 to 2 Mbps)
2. Do I need to access on the go or am I home most of the time? If you move around a lot then you'll want mobile broadband access offered by the likes of Globe / Smart / or Sun. If you are home or in one fixed spot most of the time, then a DSL or cable broadband access from Sky, PLDT, Globe or Bayan will be good options.

Fixed access is generally faster and more stable than mobile access.

Broadband generally refers to a connection that is faster that dial up (using a modem to dial the phone number of the internet provider and making a connection) which has a max of 56 kbps. The US FCC actually defines broadband speed as a minimum of 768 kbps.

The acronyms of DSL / 3G / 4G are types of technology used to provide broadband access.

And if you really want to get the full details on what all those acronyms mean, I agree with @raypin. Wiki is a great source for information.

And to confuse things further (sorry can't help myself), strictly speaking wimax being offered by Liberty/San Miguel is not 4G technology, regardless of what the ads say. The standard that is being considered as 4G technology by the ITU is 802.16m, which is still in the process of certification and acceptance. The standard commercially deployed by most operators running wimax is 802.16e-2005.

But you don't have to worry about that.

Thank you so much, these are helpful info, though I knew these things, i just needed wider explanations. Keep them flowing.

Hi guys, I was trying to uninstall my Globe Wireless broadband from my MAC, i am having difficulty doing it. I just cant delete it from my Applications, where I can find it. I tried using the 'option' key, still to no avail. Thanks in advance.

wi-tribe is the brand of the service that is being sold by Liberty Telecoms.

wimax is the name for technology that is being used by wi-tribe,

Just like Globe is the brand, GSM is the technology.
