iPhone 3G Tips and Tricks, Posted 08-26-2008, 11:48 AM #1
hmmm no more hacks... go legit I know you might already know some of these tricks. However a lot of people don’t so this is why I’m posting them. feel free to add

1. Double-down with scrolling. Many Web pages contain separate text boxes with their own scroll bars. If you're trying to move around in one, try this: Zoom in, and then scroll with two fingers instead of one. That will let you scroll just inside the box and not affect the position of the entire page.

2. Maximize battery life, part 1. iPhone and iPhone 3G models have more sensors than just the accelerometer. For example, they have a separate sensor, situated right above the earpiece, that detects ambient light. The iPhone uses this sensor only once per session, though, just as you unlock the handset. But if you cover the sensor as you unlock the phone, you will trick the handset into thinking it's in a dark room, and it will power down the screen brightness as a result.

3. Maximize battery life, part 2. The iPhone's newfound e-mail synchronization abilities are useful, but they also drain the battery more quickly. If that's a concern, under Fetch New Data, set e-mail fetch time to Hourly, and turn Push off.

4. Keep Safari's address bar handy. Ever scroll pretty far down a Web page, only to find that the address bar has disappeared? No need to scroll back up—instead, tap the top part of the screen. The address bar will reappear, regardless of where you are on the actual Web page.

5. Enter punctuation quickly. To enter a period while using the on-screen keyboard, hold down the Punctuation key and slide your finger over to the Period button. Then release it.

6. Ride the dot-com wave. When keying in Web addresses, the iPhone gives you a very useful .com button that lets you add the four characters in one press.
Click the image to open in full size.
But as with the desktop version of Safari, you can even leave that out: Safari will automatically add it for you. Bonus tip: hold down the .com button; you'll be presented with a list of alternate domain endings, such as .net, .edu, and .org.

7. Force-quit an application. Now that the iPhone is a real handheld computer, it's not immune from the occasional misbehaving application. If one freezes up on you, force-quit by pressing and holding the Home button for 6 seconds.

8. Grab a screenshot. The latest iPhone software lets you easily take screenshots of just about anything. To grab one, hold down the Home button and press the Sleep/Wake button. The iPhone will deposit a photo of the current screen in the iPhone's Photo application.

9. Google Maps: zoom in, zoom out. Instead of pinching out to zoom out, if you tap the screen with two fingers, the page will zoom out.

10. Save photos in Mail or Safari: You can save any photo emailed to you, or an image on a webpage. Just hold your finger down and the following prompt will appear.

11. One step slide for typing capital letters or numbers: Instead of pressing the “shift” or “.?123″ buttons and letting go to capitalize a letter or get a number, here’s a cool short cut. Tap the “shift”/”.?123″ button and hold your finger down, then slide to the appropriate letter or number and let go. BAM! You just saved yourself a key press

12. Like to take self portraits with the camera? Here’s a handy tip: first hold your finger down on the shutter button and keep it there. Next, strike a pose while holding the camera at a distance–then release your finger–BAM…a photo will be taken! This method helps reduce the shake that usually occurs when you press the shutter, resulting in blurry images.

13. Many users (myself included) have been experiencing a lot of problems lately with apps on their iPhone crashing or simply not even launching. Two solutions to the problem have been discovered, but the first is definitely less than ideal. One reader of iPhone Atlas claims that the problem can be fixed by reducing the number of apps on the iPhone.

14. If you listen to music on your iPhone while surfing the web or using other applications, you may occasionally need to access the iPod or its controls. Sure, you can hit the home button and jump into the iPod, but iPhone has a much more elegant way of accessing iPod controls. Click the image to open in full size. Ever since the iPhone update in September (v1.1.1), double clicking the "Home" button on your iPhone brings up a set of controls for volume, skipping tracks, and pausing your music without leaving the current application. There's even an "iPod" button that takes you right to the iPod application. But the fun doesn't stop there, so read on for more "Home" button tricks.

15. modified old iPhone dock to work with the 3G. If you don't mind carving into your dock with a knife.

16. To save battery, just turn off 3g, since globe's 3g is erratic and it keeps you falling down to edge and even to gprs... Whats the 3g for? except if you are in makati and other priority areas of globe - @loko_loko

17. If you want the normal (2)ABC (3)DEF etc keyboard... nokia users, sell your nokia! get an iPhone hehhee
The Japanese Kana keyboard gives access to a lot of symbols that are inaccessible from the standard Western keyboards, like mathematical symbols, circled/uncircled numbers, weather symbols, card suits, arrows, etc. (the usual unicode symbols; the kind of stuff accessible via Option+key on a mac).
Click the image to open in full size.

18. Keep Away from Chargers Not Approved for iPhone Use

19. How To Create A WebClip Icon For Your Site . This is a good tip for those of you who design web sites and applications geared toward the iPhone. Dan Dickinson posted instructions for creating the icon for your site that shows up on the springboard when someone creates a web clip for it.

20. What to do if your iPhone gets wet. Whether the culprit is a sink, toilet or rainstorm, getting your iPhone soaked in water or any other liquid is bad news. If the unthinkable happens, and you don’t have insurance, your best bet is to make sure the iPhone is off, swap it down with a dry cloth, then do one of the following immediately: Put your iPhone in a tub or bag of uncooked rice and let it sit for several hours (up to 2 days).

21. Set up Hotmail on the iPhone via Gmail. I know a few people who have had Hotmail address for a long time and don’t want to change. They also have bought iPhones and now have no way to use the built-in client on the iPhone to read mail. This solutions lets them read Hotmail on their iPhone.

22. Secrets of the Sensors. The iPhone has three cool sensors. First, it has an accelerometer that detects when you’ve rotated the iPhone into landscape orientation. In programs like Photos, Safari, and iPod, it triggers the screen image to rotate as well.

23. Keyboard Speedups. Don’t bother using the Shift key to capitalize a new sentence. The iPhone does that capitalizing automatically.
Don’t put apostrophes in contractions, either; the iPhone will put those in for you, too.

24. Customizing the iPod Buttons. The iPod module on the iPhone starts out with buttons along the bottom for summoning four lists: Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos. But what about Albums? Genres? Composers? They’re there, all right, but hidden; you have to tap More to see them.

25. How to Create Custom Ringtones in GarageBand 4.1.1 or QuickTime for Free
Here a couple of ways to create and use your own custom ringtones on the iPhone for free:
GarageBand (require: iLife)
For GarageBand users Apple’s latest update; 4.1.1 allows iPhone users to easily create their own Ringtones.
If the song you want is in your iTunes library; simply drag and drop the song from iTunes to Garageband into a new track.
Turn the cycle region on.
Adjust the cycle region of the song to accommodate what part of the song you want the ringtone to be; it can be any part of the song but must be 40 seconds or less.
Choose Share > Send Ringtone to iTunes
Sync with your iPhone, change your ringtone and have a friend phone you.
Via LifeHacker. However this expects you to own iLife which some users don’t so here’s another way which everyone can do with QuickTime that comes with every installation of Mac OSX.
QuickTime
Open the Song in QuickTime
Adjust the Selection Indicators to where want the ringtone to start and end (>40secs)

Copy the selection (?C)
Open new QuickTime Window
Paste the selection (?V)
Export (?E) the file as “INSERT_NAME_HERE”.m4r
Double click on the newly created Ringtone (in the Finder)
Sync with your iPhone, change your ringtone and have a friend phone you.
Unfortunately there are a few more steps but it just as simple, will work on both Macs and Windows and it is 100% free.Update: Apparently the regular version of QuickTime doesn’t have Selection Indicators so doing it that way will cost you $29.95. However you can accomplish this with any Audio Mixer/Editor; for example use Fission’s trial to edit the song into the ring tone you want and save it as .m4r. Or as Brad’s comment below shows you can also do this with the open source Audacity.

26. Stopping incoming calls . To stop an incoming call from ringing, press the sleep / wake button. To send the call immediately to VoiceMail, press the sleep / wake button twice.

27. Surfing Internet while talking iPhone: You can get on the internet DURING a call! You can only do this if your connected to a WIFI network (it wont work via edge), just hit the home key and click on Safari. Now your surfing while talking! The person on the other end can’t hear the keyboard clicks either!

28. When typing a text message, hold your finger over the text field and it will enable a small magnifying glass that lets you move back and forward through text and spaces.

29. If you are writing something and the iPhone flags a word as misspelled that you know is not misspelled, cancel the correction 3 times and the word will be put into the dictionary. If you write a lot, this feature is quite useful!

1. Type “welll” (3 L’s) and the iPhone will auto correct to “We’ll”

2. Type “Helll” (3 L’s) and the iPhone will auto correct to “He’ll”

3. Type “itsa” and the iPhone will auto correct to “It’s”

4. Type “weree” (2 E’s) and the iPhone will auto correct to “We’re”

(In general, repeating the last letter will tell us its a contraction. The “itsa” is an exception since it could go either way. Think “it’s a…” No need for jumping over to the secondary keyboard at all for the apostrophe.

30. Google Maps. Typing in the three letter airport code while in maps will bring the airport up on the map. So if you are trying to view a map of say Renton, WA. Typing SEA (or sea) will bring up the Seattle airport. It’s relatively quick to zoom out, recenter over Renton, and zoom in again. It seems to recognize all primary and secondary US airports and many overseas airports as well.

31. Tapping on the address in your contacts opens it up in Google maps. heheh not sure what will show up on Manila map.

32.Zoom a column. You can zoom text columns as well as pictures. Double-tap on the column to fit it to the display. Double-tap again to return out of the zoom. Not only does Safari zoom block-quoted text independently of regular text but if you move your finger after the first double-tap-to-fit, it interprets the next double-tap as a re-center page command rather than a return-to-previous-zoom. Smart.

33. You can type a website address without adding the ‘.com’ just like on Safari on a Mac

34. Examining the URL. To peek at a link’s destination, touch and hold the link for a few seconds. You can also do this with images to see if they are linked. If a link appears and you don’t want to activate it, just slide your finger away until the destination text disappears.

35. “find in this page” on Safari. Bookmarklets are little pieces of Javascript code that can be saved as ordinary bookmarks in your web browser. They enhance your browsing experience by giving you super-instant access to useful tools and special functionality.

36. To delete a video slide your finger left to right over the name of the video, it will then come up with an option to delete. Of course you will also have to delete it from your itunes or else it ends up back on.

37. To delete applications from both your iPhone and iTunes (so that they don't come back when you sync):
In iTunes, go to "Applications" under "LIBRARY" (NOT in the iPhone view!). There you can right-click (or Ctrl-Click on Mac?) on an application and select "Delete". Next time you sync, the app will be removed from the iPhone as well.

38. When you come across a page design that has embedded frame content and no scroll bars, you can use two finger scroll to move the content within the frame.

39. The built in microphone in the provided headset is also a button. Pressing this will answer the phone when listening via the headset and also Pause/Play the iPod function.

40. DONT DROP IT!

41. To save an email that you have started typing as a draft, press 'Cancel', and then you will prompted to save the email. If you do, it will get saved into you 'Draft' Mail folder.

42. If you would like your calendar week to start on Monday instead of on Sunday, change your region format to UK.

43. If you have Exchange emails/contacts/calender setup via ActiveSync you may find that you can't edit/delete any events in the calender on the iPhone. To fix the issue, make sure the email address and windows logon name entered in setup matches with Exchange/AD. I had the same issue and entering the exact information as account properties in AD fixed the problem.

44. You can play music from your iPod while playing games.. all you need to do is ..
Play your iPod 1st before you load your game... then load your game and once the splash screen of the game comes up.. double tap your home button (suppose to bring up iPod controls unless u have changed it).. hit the play button on the iPod controls close it and you can play games while listening to your own music.

45. When on the home screen tapping at the bottom left or right of the screen near the top of the 'dock' will instantly switch between home screen pages. This is a lot quicker and easier than swiping from one page to another.

46. If you want to buy new accessories for your iPhone 3G visit http://www.weareready.hk/

Nice tips, especially 15. I've seen this done with dentist's tools and it certainly is daunting. Not for the meek, repurposing a 2G dock for the 3G
