How to reset external display preferences?, Posted 07-08-2008, 11:37 AM #1
I connected an external display and the screens of both my macbook and the external display went garbled after I chose the Mirror option. I have to remove the display connector to restore my macbook display. However, now everytime I connect the external display it chooses the Mirror option so both displays are garbled.

How do I reset it to the default Extended Display option? Tried switching via keyboard hotkey while the external display is connected but no effect.

Any preferences I should delete? Any special key to disable mirroring?

Thanks!

In Systems Prefs, under the Displays applet and Arrangement tab, disable the 'Mirror Displays' button. Do this before you connect your external monitor.

The Arrangement tab does not show up until you connect the external monitor.

Ok to connect it, but don't turn it on. That's how it is with my set-up.

Just to test it, I disconnected my external adaptor but still, the Arrangement tab still shows. I'm at a loss as to what's different from my gear to yours. FYI, I'm connected to a DVI monitor.

Found my solution. I deleted the file: com.apple.windowserver.plist and just rebooted the machine. Then I open Preferences and when I connect the external display it has reverted to non-mirrored status. All is ok now - will just remember not to turn on mirroring.
