my video card is the nvdia 8600 256vram....... next week will wait what will be the Apple services center's solution... but from the looks of it.. based on the discussions in Apple support... there is no definite root cause and solution yet.....

I had this same experience after i fried my GPU due to overclocking on my PeeCee. Better have it checked, sounds like there's a toastin on your hardware.

I just put the lid close.. and put the mbp to sleep.. after 30 minutes when i came back.. got this black screen... internal and on the external monitor......

I tried to do the PRAM, PMC reset.. never came back... i decided to bring it to apple center...

wha lah....

last thing i did was upgrade my Leopart to 10.5.3 , 4 days ago.. but not sure if that is related....

I got the same setup as these guys.. 90 to 95%.. i use external lcd......

it also happens to me, not very often, but exactly the same on my 17 MBP after the screen goes to sleep and i wake it up.

i tried pulling off the lcd connection, or waiting but only a hard reset brings it back to normal.
but it doesn't happen often enough to worry me. maybe once in two weeks.

I have searched for this on Apple discussions and resetting the SMC was the only suggestion given > http://discussions.apple.com/message...393372#7393372

I might try to do that before sending this in...

I guess I'll add myself to the list of people having this specific problem.

Just bought this last June 13. Whatever happened to "Apple, It Just Works"? Click the image to open in full size.

senco technical support says that before panicking, try to download the latest OS update. i did that, and now i've got my fingers crossed that i'll never see this screen again...

I already downloaded the 10.5.4 update a week or two before this incident happened. Anyway, I just had to turn off the unit by holding down the power button and restart. Good thing it seems to be working again.

just for general information, nvidia announced recently in an SEC disclosure (i think, not sure) that they discovered a bad batch of chips that have shipped in the past. they have set aside about 200 million dollars to address the failures but did not disclose the affected cards. the announcement might be on their site.

there have been many reported failures of 8400 and i think 8600 cards in hps and dells. from what i've been reading, the mbp 2.2 8600 (128 mb) model seems to be the most problematic of the mbps in terms of gpu failure. can't say if there's a connection between the screen issues in this thread and the defective batch of gpus but might be a good idea to get APP if you can just to be safe and cover your bases. hopefully not. check your logs too as apparently some of the indicators are nvidia drivers crashing.

cheers!
