Pros and Cons: AEBS + EXT HD vs Time Capsule?, Posted 03-26-2008, 07:41 PM #1
ok, aside from the price which of course would depend on A) where you are buying them, and B) what brand of EXT HD you are getting, i need some advice for what to get based purely on performance bcoz price is almost exactly the same.

i am in the US now and was about to get the TC from the apple store- cost of $299, roughly P12,450

but my old plan was to get an AEBS and an EXT HD, which i had done step one, got a maxtor 500gb for P5,800 in ghills... then found a bnew AEBS on ebay for $149 including shipping... so total price is P11,983... a P500 saving.. so not a huge issue for me at that this level of cost...

when i heard that Time machine would not work with AEBS and an EXT HD, it was a no brainer to go for the TC, but now with the new updates, the dilemma is back...

do i sell the maxtor and AEBS still and stick with an apple device that is 2 in 1? or stick with what i have now with AEBS + ext HD combo?

help pls =)

stick with the combo. the trouble of selling it (with depreciation) doesn't justify the P500 savings you get and the convenience of 2-in-1 unit.

I have external HDDs that are just waiting for an AEBS to complete the combo. I was eyeing TC also for Time Machine but since the firmware and software updates have bumped the AEBS I'll drop TC in my buy list.

At first I was also drawn towards buying Time Capsule, but after much thought, I decided it wasn't really worth the price. The trouble I have with 2-in-1 devices is that when one of them goes kaput (say the hard drive), you'll have to have it serviced together with the other device, leaving you without both devices, albeit maybe just for a short while. Or maybe it's just the cheapskate in me talking...

P.S. Maybe rethink the thread title. I think its more about Time Capsule not Time Machine. Just a suggestion.

I just use a generic 250GB HD attached via AEBS and backup wireless.

Just like Time Capsule, the initial backup will take awhile. It is best to do an initial backup connected via ethernet.

- initial backup (excluding my music, video and pictures) wirelessly - 17GB - approximately 3.5 hours

and out of curiosity, i tried connecting via ethernet as apple recommendation for Time Capsule and it works.

- initial backup (including my music, video and pictures) ethernet - 48GB - approximately 3.5 hours

I have an ultimate all-in-one product called iMac and a magical and revolutionary product called an iPad.

nice metrics you got there antz88c, is that over gigabit AEBS or the fast ethernet? 3 times the speed over ethernet.

The only reason I'd go with the AEBS + external hard drive setup is warranty. The Time Capsule comes with 1-year warranty, while I can get a 1TB WD My Book Essential locally with a 3-year warranty. That means if the HD of the Time Capsule conks out after a year, I'm screwed. Is the Time Capsule's HD even user-replaceable? Let's say the HD dies after the warranty period, is it possible to replace just the HD so I won't have to replace the whole unit (or stuck using it as a regular AEBS). This is very important because if anything will fail in the Time Capsule, chances are it will be the HD.

I'm notoriously unlucky when it comes to hard disks, so I think I'll be going with the AEBS + ext. HD combo.
