What is akratz.com?, Posted 03-13-2008, 10:43 AM #1
When I searched Google today I got a page that isn't google but the address reads "www.google.com". "Google.com" is in the top-middle and in large font but the link reads "www.akratz.com". Happened in both Safari and Firefox.

Who is akratz.com?

Happened twice this week. Same thing with Blogger, another Google site.

Did somebody hijack Google?

EDIT: put web adresses in quotes so it won't show as links.

The DNS (Domain Name Server) that your internet connection connects too might be the one hijacked..... I use OpenDNS for my servers - a lot faster than using the default from my ISP.

First time it happened, Monday or Tuesday, I switched to OpenDNS.

Just now, I thought of removing OpenDNS' DNS and see what happens. WAHLA! Things went back to normal.

BTW, I am using SmartBRO.

hey! hey!!!! i got the same thing, too! weird. i thought it was some cookie in my safari. so i reset my safari - and firefox, too. it's when i type in the address without the dot com attached. like "apple" or "google". hassle.

then the other day, i used the wifi at another location and it was gone. fixed. when i got home, problem again.

i'm on smartbro, too. so i figured the problem had to be on the smartbro end. what's up with that? how can this be fixed?

- on another note, couple years ago, i would hit the Network in my finder and see all these computers in my network - that i can access from my computer. weird. hassle. smart wifi naman yun before. got me thinking: "is my laptop secure??"

hello guys, its been two days that i have been asking google for this "akratz".

i am also using smart bro(secondary dsl) and then saw this akratz if viewing an unable to find pages.

seems like the hijack is on the smart broadband and this SHOULD be considered HIGH PRIORITY to smart bro.

right now, i dont suggest browsing sites where you type in username and passwords, sensitive informations or credit card informations while using smart broadband, why?? obviously the connection is hijacked somewhere. that poses a great security threat that outgoing information you send can be tracked(usernames, passwords, etc).

i'll rather have no dsl connection than having my sensitive information open to others.

two cents here.

yup. there's something weird with smartbro. like i mentioned, i could see other peoples folders in my network before.

if you "whois akratz" on google, you'll find out more about the owner of the domain. the info doesn't give you much, tho. but you'll see how many hits this guy's been making.

when i type in a URL now, i just make sure i put the .com next to it.
