imovie 08 hands-on, Posted 08-10-2007, 08:38 PM #1
i just came back from a retail store here in japan to try out the new imacs.. particularly imovie08

the clip organization, skimming all the new features in imovie08.. hands down.. i say i am impressed.. fast as in really fast... skim through the clips.. click and drag to extract a portion. bam.

downside.. well err.. disappointing..

the editing capabilites from version 06.. most of it were removed. or downgraded

first.. the number of transitions were reduced.. around 10 [ dunno the exact ]

title positioning cannot be customized [ top center bottom left right..]

limited audio track customizations.. [ edit in garageband then import back ? ]

so imovie08 is really a tradeoff of new versus previous features..

bottomline.. if you heavily used imovie06 for your video projects and switch to imovie08. goodluck.. the whole editing workflow totally changed.. warning.. you might be at some point frustrated by the new interface.

The last G4 introduced was way back in 2005. You cant expect Apple to support it forever.

Can you install iMovie '06 and '08 on the same system? I've been reading online that a lot of iMovie users find it crippleware.

It says on the System Requirements page of Apple that it supports PowerPC G4 processors. Here - http://www.apple.com/ilife/systemrequirements.html

You should check out the iMovie 08 thread on MacNN - there are a lot of complaints there, but I'm sure an update would fix most of them.

Alas this thread is about imovie 08 and not ilife 08.

According to the link provided imovie 08 only supports 1.9GHz G5s or better.
