The Nokia E61 thread, Posted 07-16-2006, 10:20 AM #1
Jumping off from this thread, which seems to indicate a growing community of Nokia E61 users in PhilMUG, I thought I'd create a separate discussion for this phone (which I must admit, I am liking a lot more than I expected to!)

Here are a few links that might be useful:

The review from AllAbout Symbian that sold me on this phone.
A 15 minute MP4 video version of the above review (42 MB file)
Another favorable review from OSNews.
Another review of the E61 on the web.

And I just wanted to share a couple of useful links that I bookmarked while setting up my E61 to work with my Mac:

iSync plugin to get your phone syncing with 10.4.7
Useful Collection of Software for the E61
Roman Keller's Aqua Theme for Symbian

I still can't believe after years of passing thru multiple Sony Ericssons and two Treos that I'm back to Nokia!

loving my E61, great OS, as far as i am concerned, version 3 of this S60 series is really a great improvement. look, it can even go Aqua, as vic pointed out:

and i also love the way the OS has the equivalent of apple (command) + tab, it really makes switching tasks a lot easier especially if you have both the browser and the IM (agile messenger) running.

Click the image to open in full size.

and the wifi, yes, this is the best browser i've seen in a mobile phone.

Click the image to open in full size.

and of course, the ability to remote lock your E61 is another reason why i am so happy with this phone. more nifty features in vic's links.

This gives me so much temptation to give up Treo & grab an E61. But why does it have to be a Nokia? I never liked Nokia. And my friends always ask me why... My perennial answer... " Dare to be Different!" So... what now? Go Figure!

Hey assdoc! Is time to make that switch? I know you're hands are even more itchy to get an E61... hehe

I can totally relate to the above comment about Nokia. I always perceived Sony Ericssons to be a better fit for the Mac, and generally more advanced, and yet when i canvassed the market for a replacement for my Treo (other than the SE phones i was also looking at a Blackberry) i just kept coming back to the E61. I didn't really need a camera function, and the price point was about right ... but i didn't expect to enjoy it this much.

In fact I'm lying on the couch typing this on the e61! Hehe.

I haven't tried setting it up, but I read a review online that said that the VoIP seems to work only for internal network usage and cannot currently be configured for use with Skype/Gizmo-type accounts.

Ha! You know the point at which I realized just how powerful this phone is? Last night, I was running the E61 off of my home WiFi network, and installed the Nokia Podcasting application out of curiosity.

I did a search for one of my usual podcasts (Ira Flatow's Science Friday, if you really must know) and to my surprise a list of all the recent episodes popped up almost instantly. I saw one for "Sports Medicine" which looked interesting, so I clicked it and grabbed the 12MB file, and it started playing through the speaker (which is quite loud, btw). And while the podcast is playing in the background, you can still answer SMSes or surf the web ... it really is quite versatile. And the best part? Nokia Podcasting even works with VIDEO podcasts, courtesy of the built in RealPlayer!

Good thing this phone has WiFi though ... I'd never be doing this off of a GPRS connection hehe.

Hehe I'm using the pouch from my Oakley sunglasses.

Since we're talking about gripes ... my personal gripe right now is that the shape of the phone (flat, wide, slab) doesn't quite conform to the side of my head (round) ... and ergo sometimes I have trouble aligning my ear with the earpiece. Minor niggle that will probably go away once I get the hang of it. And besides, the speakerphone is EXCELLENT.
