I believe the more accurate statement is the iPhone can't multi-task 2 third party apps because I can't run both of the above-mentioned games simultaneously.

But then again, is multi-tasking really practical on small form factor mobile devices? I doubt if one can watch a movie and compose an email given the iPhone's limited screen space. The same goes for the iPad: I don't think its screen is large enough to watch a movie and surf the web at the same time.

If multi-tasking is something one does regularly, then a laptop is the mobile device of choice, not the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.
I love the courier, but it's just still a concept. of it's out together with the iPad, without a doubt I would purchase microsoft's baby.

the voice recorder app on the 3gs, notes and safari are all native apps. How come they don't allow me to multi-task?

Ok my apologies, the iPhone, iPod touch and the ipad can multi task to a certain limited extent. Unfortunately, it's just that LIMITED. Try this on your iPhone and see how frustrating it gets: on the 11th page of your application window (?) open safari, if you need to write something on your notes app, you press the home button swipe to notes app, open app. If your done with notes, close, swipe to safari open app. Repeat process if you need to open notes whilst your browsing. Lame.
Do you use the voice recorder? I use it during class (lecture is 3 hours long). On playback, the software forces me to stay on the voice recorder app, if I'll open another app, the voice app is terminated. During voice recorded playbacks, the iPhone morphs into a voice recorder and it's other features are muted temporarily(no calls or texting or using the dictionary app while listening to the Voice recorder? =lame). In a fast paced world, multi-taking is a MUST. The software needs to adjust to our needs, sadly apple opted not to.
In yesterdays' unveiling of the "iPad" one apple senior employee (Phil Schiller or Tim cook I can't recall) remarked: "the iPad adjusts to your needs." the irony.

the iPad seems like a darn good launchpad for apple's tech down the line. it makes perfect marketing sense to expand features in future iterations of a product in order to extend the product life cycle. one of the things that apple seems to do very well is not to put all its eggs in one basket.

2010 - release the iPad as-is
2011 - iPad w/ iSight + flash support
2012 - 16:9 aspect ratio, 1080p playback + speed bump
2013 - ???

pundits may take its potshots at the iPad, but it's Steve and co who will be laughing all the way to the bank for the next 4 years for minor iterations of the same product that everyone will buy anyway.

Here's are excerpts from an article in the New York Times written by David Pogue on the iPad:

--
Today Apple finally unveiled its tablet computer, the iPad. Thus concludes Phase 1 of the standard Apple new-category roll-out: months of feverish speculation and hype online, without any official indication by Apple that the product even exists.

Now Phase 2 can begin: the bashing by the bloggers who've never even tried it: "No physical keyboard!" "No removable battery!" "Way too expensive!" "Doesn't multitask!" "No memory-card slot!"

That will last until the iPad actually goes on sale in April. Then, if history is any guide, Phase 3 will begin: positive reviews, people lining up to buy the thing, and the mysterious disappearance of the basher-bloggers.
--
Now, though, it looks like Apple really has created something new. Criticisms of "Like a laptop" and "a big iPod Touch" don't really do justice to the possibilities.
--
At the same time, the bashers should be careful, too. As we enter Phase 2, remember how silly you all looked when you all predicted the iPhone's demise in that period before it went on sale.

Concepts are always better then their real life counter parts because it is backed by imagination, ideals, magic and unicorns. Believe me, once the\at product is put into real life production and real life use then it will always fall short of expectations.

I do disagree with you about the modern concept of the "multi-tasker." I run my own company and handled quite a few employees with specialized skill sets. It is my observation that those who have single minded focus (and moves on to the next task after they are done) always gets the job done more thoroughly with higher quality then the multi-tasker who tries to do several things at once. But of course this is only a human condition I am talking about and not really something that can be applied to digital appliances.

But as a fellow iPhone owner, I do understand your frustration of the current inability for the iPhone to multi-task. That is why I suggest you give Apple your feedback here:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

The great thing about software, is that they can always add new things to it. Apple due to public demand may implement multi-tasking in version 4 of the iPhone/iPad OS. In the worst case scenario, and can always take a look at Google's Android platform for your phone and tablet needs.

This is probably a very unscientific observation but after teaching my mother, 5 aunties, my grandmother, a soon to be in-law over the course of 10 years how to use a OSX - believe me, Windowed multi-tasking confuses the hell out of them. "Oh no where did the window go?" " Where can I find the 'Save As' in the File menu?" "Why is that shiny dot still under Word?" But I noticed that they all had a lot easier time grasping the concepts when I taught them how to use their "itouch" (yep they call it that, sorry politically correct Apple users) and its apps.

Not that I don't want multi-tasking but I believe for non-techies like them, the modal approach seem to be a much easier metaphor for them to grasp computing.

Expose on the iPad might be useful. For maybe up to four apps at a time for a start?

This happens. This is an anagram.

For the none geek user, multi tasking might not be really a big deal. Just ask all my non techie pals who have iPhones, "what is multi-tasking?" They have no idea what it is. They purchased the iPhone/itouch because it is a "cool" device and eventually they find out how useful it is and tell all their friends.

What's with the not-living-to-the-hype with the iPad?

I don't recall Apple bludgeoning us that it'll change the way we live/work or play. AFAIK, tablet pc's never did caught on; and the iPad feels more of an 'accessory' or an extension of your iPhone and Mac. Even Jobs did have worries at first, being just a 'entertainment in the toilet' device.

i'm currently downloading it using itunes. were you able to download the whole 1.05GB file?

why don't you let go? move on with your life. it's not about what happened in the past or what you think might happen in the future. it's about the ride, for christ's sake. there's no point going through all this crap, if you're not gonna enjoy the ride. and you know what -- when you least expect it, something comes along... something even better than you even planned for...
