Default San Francisco aims for free citywide WiFi

    CNN.com reports:
Friday, October 22, 2004 Posted: 11:37 AM EDT (1537 GMT)
SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom set a goal Thursday of providing free wireless Internet activity in his city that sees itself as a vanguard of the Internet revolution.

"We will not stop until every San Franciscan has access to free wireless Internet service," he said in his annual state of the city address. "These technologies will connect our residents to the skills and the jobs of the new economy."

I don't think so !! Free WiFi ?? All the ISP/Cable/DSL providers will get pissed !! Now if the WiFi is available for those with dial-up/cable & DSL broadband subscriptions, then it would be great !!

Just imagine, you pay your monthly internet bill and if you want to go out, you can still be connected anywhere by WiFi !! Boy, laptop sales will go up !!!

The only one hit hard will be those 'few' WiFi companies selling WiFi internet cards!!

Not sure if it would be quite doable in theory, but in reality, I don't know if it can be done business wise, technology wise and hardware wise ?? Whateveritis, it is going to cost some big bucks !!

Would really be nice though !!

    Cheers,
