Apple reboots into retailing

Carolyn Ramsay couldn't figure out why she couldn't fit more digital pictures into her Apple iBook laptop. So she brought it to the Apple Store here, where one of the resident technicians — called "Geniuses" — found a quick solution.

He sold her additional memory and installed it at no extra charge, within 20 minutes, even though the computer was two years out of warranty.

Her reaction? "This place is fabulous," says Ramsay, who runs a local non-profit. "Are you kidding? My family has stopped going to the store that used to service our computers. We don't need them."

Being a Genius in Los Angeles has its perks. Movie superstar Tom Hanks brought in his iPod with a question, and the late Marlon Brando once reached Angelotti on the phone for iPod tips. So many people crowded rocker Tom Petty at the Santa Monica store that Angelotti was dispatched to his house to help him set up new equipment.
