Default Revealed: New Power Mac G5, iMac G5, eMac Specs

From the almost always reliable, Think Secret.

Highly reliable sources have confirmed the specifications of Apple's forthcoming revisions to its Power Mac G5, iMac G5 and eMac systems, expected to start shipping within a few days of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger's April 29th release.

New Power Mac G5 systems, code-named Q87, will top out at 2.7GHz, sources said, while video cards are being upgraded with double the SDRAM. All models will feature SuperDrives offering dual-layer DVD+R support, as well as DVD±RW/CD-RW compatibility.

Until there is no official word from Apple, please post this under Rumors and Reviews.

I'm quite tempted tp upgrade from my Power Mac G4 although I do hope these new G5's are the PPC 970MP's and will have more than 1 optical and 2 hard drive bays. :hyper:

I really hope that the rumor isnt true. The upgrade increment of the PowerMac's lousy.

Because of these rumors some of the potential switchers are holding back their Mac purchases. I have a cousin-in-law who intends to buy her first Mac, an eMac 1.25GHz. She was all set to buy the unit but when she heard a rumor that new eMac models would be coming out she decided to wait it out.

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate any move by Apple to improve their product line but sometimes when rumors do come out it makes it harder for dealers to close a sale. I'm not a dealer but I do what I can to convince others to switch...it then makes it harder for me as well.

You could actually predict when the next upgrade increment will happen. For example PowerMacs are renewed annualy for the past 3 years. On the aspect of specs your informed guess is as good as anyone's

Apple should adopt DDR2 memory for there PowerMac line this year and jack up the stock DIMM to a single 1GB stick. I expect Tiger to be as much a memory hog as Panther. A 400GB SATA drive would be nice at the highest end. I got a 400GB ATA drive working on my PowerMac and its wonderfu. :drunk:

Did Steve promised to have a dual 3.0GHz last year? Is 2.7GHz they best they could do after a year's wait?

If that was the entry level PowerMac I'd be impressed.
