23 inch iMac? Sounds like an all-in-one media center solution to me! Wonder if they'll ever include a tuner card?
Well, there's always EyeTV. If this is true, I'm jumping all over this thing as it'll un-cramp my desk considerably.

Re: next generation imacs this sept
This is not cool. They opt not to use Conroe, which is supposed to be the processor of Macpro. If heat is the issue, why did they use Core Duo which uses more power and is hotter than Conroe for their current lineup of MBP and iMac. they should consider Conroe instead of Merom which is a mobile processor and less performance. Conroe is the most anticipated processor in the PC world and considered the best Intel desktop chip available.

Nope, the Mac Pros are using the next-generation Xeon processors, codename Woodcrest.

Why did they use the Core Duo instead of the desktop Core 2 Duo (codename Conroe) chips on the MacBook Pros and iMacs? Probably because the Core 2 Duo chips weren't out yet when the MacBook Pros and the iMacs were released.

The 5th Gen iPod are due for a new model this month, it's been a year since then.
Meanwhile, the Core 2 Duo for mobile computing is something to look forward to and hopefully to stabilize when Leopard becomes available next spring.

But rumors before the release of Mac pro were saying it will sport Conroe procs.

Thats why im saying if they've used a more hotter processor before, so why not use Conroe for their consumer desktop lineup which is the iMac and Mac Mini than use a slower mobile based Merom.

Re: next generation imacs this sept
I've read various threads on Conroe's Power/Heat output. They pretty much say it will be just as hot as the old G5 processor (if not hotter).
So on that point, I guess suavetico has a point -- they solved the heat problem before, they can solve it again. However heat is not the only issue. The G5 processor DID require some major cooling which contributed to the "noise" the iMac G5 generated. The iMac Yonah, in contrast, has been highly praised as a fairly silent-running machine.
Given that Apple's been getting an earful of complaints in the US market for MBP noise, choosing the much cooler Merom might be a better PR choice.
Furthermore, by sticking with Merom for both MBP and iMacs Apple might enjoy better economies of scale from ordering bulk quantities of the chips, and their accompanying chipsets.
But then again Conroe is a cheaper processor compared to the Merom.
In the end, I doubt it will be about performance at all -- it'll be about business and what Apple thinks is the "optimal" path towards a win-win situation between them and consumers.

That's why you shouldn't believe rumors.

Last time I checked, Apple was still using the Core Duos on the iMac and Mac mini. It's a RUMOR that they'll use the Merom. I'm with loko__loko on this, save your energy and speculate when we know in fact which new chips will be used in what systems.
EDIT: psymd1's first post in this thread could have caused some confusion because of the way it was worded. I just want to make it clear, according the article that psymd1 cited, it's RUMORED that the new iMacs will use the Merom chips. It's not a fact. It may, or may not, be true.
