Default Linux Geek falls for Mac OS X

Found this article today which kinda mirrors how my transition to OS X has been coming from Linux & WinXP.

    Hope you enjoy it.

Interesting read Dave, thanks for posting it.

I agree with the author on a few points, particulary about not having a built-in picture viewer in Finder and lack of a "paned" FTP app. IIRC, KDE's window manager could connect to an FTP site for file management.

Don't know about the built-in picture viewer, but, the thumbnails in the finder are fine with me. Of course, a bigger view like XP's filmstrip mode wouldn't hurt.

For FTP, I never did like the drag and drop type FTP clients. I tend to use the CLI version within Terminal. But then, that's from years of DOS and Linux CLI use.

Even the programs I write for work run on the CLI. Much faster and easier to maintain.

BTW, you can do CMD-K to connect to a remote FTP server and download files. Unfortunately, you CAN'T UPLOAD.

    hypersomniac,

PowerMac G5? Nahh... not for personal use.. not enough room in the house. Oks na iMac G5

I really bought it for the iLife apps. Its fantastic.

    hoho,

I'm so glad I got it.. for once Mari's (he's 9 now) using the computer and not just for games. In just a couple of weeks, he's already remodeled his desktop from mine and I know pag nangangalikot na sa computer, it means he's really interested.

Kaaway ko na nga sa mac ngayon eh... I have to tell him to do his homework para lang makasingit ako he he.

Hehehe... so much for you wishing he'd become a musician. But then again, with a Mac, you never know. The Mac may just turn on his creative side.

As for iLife, I do agree, it is fantastic! I got iLife '05 when it first came out, and now, I'm slowly trying to replace my Extensis Portfoilio sofware with iPhoto, which now officially supports DSLR RAW Files.

I still use the CLI for a lot of things, even at work, when I bring my PowerBook in. I use the powerfull Unix tools to manipulate files into something that I need.

I do get strange looks from my boss and co-workers when they see me popping open a Terminal Window and with a few commands get the results that they needed without having to write any code aside from my command line commands. To them, it looks like voodoo... hehehehe...

    H
