a lot of guys don't care much about mushy or gifts that can make most women say "AWWW, that's so sweet!". Guys also generally appreciate THE actual gift and could care less if it was wrapped nicely or given in a very unique way. A sweet gift for him is being given something which he is into, like a software game, particular things that he collects, a computer accessory.

Basically one can just ask his closest guy friend and ask what he expects as a gift... or like kiko said just get something to add to his hobbies/likes..
I'm pretty sure whatever it is he should like and treasure it...whatever you gave him...
