My college degree was with a major in Legal Management.
My first job was as a marketing officer in a bank branch.
My second job was in investment banking.
I took my MBA with a major in Finance.
I now work in a telecom company but my job has me crossing over a lot to the IT field.

The only thing I can say is that a person's career could be totally disconnected to the college course he takes. All that stuff about selecting the right course in college because it will drive your life and future is overrated. While I didnt turn out that bad, I only wish though that I had studied more in school

    Hi Chinggay,

I am from the banking sector and I can tell you for your article that it is a nice, high paying, and very stressful industry. Maybe you can add in your article that if one persues the initial want for money (since it becomes a neccessity at the early part of our young lives) and a career then do it while your young BUT always save for a rainy day.

Get some insights as well from the latest article of Rod Nepomuceno at Star newspaper, For love or Money.

I started out in advertising and stayed there for 6 years then moved on to specialize in below-the-line marketing as both a practitioner and this time a business owner. On the side I host a TV show on studio 23, host corporate events, and endorse products as well. I got into advertising then because creating really compelling product stories interested me. I moved on to the below-the-line arenas because of the challenge of being able to convince people just as effectively about products and solutions in new avenues and media. I got into TV hosting because, well, I wasn't shy (makapal ako in other words) and because some people from the network really thought I should do it.

It is entirely possible and so exciting to be able to have many careers going on at the same time, as long as one has many inclinations. You simply have to pursue your true interests no matter what college course you find yourself in at the moment. At the end of the day, you always learn the real ropes on the job anyway. Having said that, I must add that there will be times when new things will interest you down the line. Pursue them all as well! Simple as this may sound, anyone who likes anything enough to learn and exhaust its ins and outs will probably be (in the long run) as good as (or even better than) the person who took up a course for it in college. So it's all about going for nothing less than what you like, pursuing what you think you are or can be good at, and having the devotion for it. And don't worry, no time and energy is wasted in the process because everything you learn connects itself to your next endeavor anyway.

(Gawd I sound like a friggin manang!)

With re to vocation and profession, I pretty much feel that way about teaching. You're not exactly the best paid, and it drains you from all sides (emotional, physical, and yes, social). Being a teacher demands heart and soul, and I truly believe it's a calling.

    I am a graphic designer.

My first job was in a start-up (now defunct) magazine.
    Multi-tasking ability was my key.
    Lesson learned: CTRL+Alt+Delete (familiar eiy?)

Moved to design studio as visualizer.
Understand and learned the work procedures in a design studio setup.
    Lesson learned: CTRL+S (Save)

    Currently working in the profit-oriented wireless communication industry;
Applying the things I learned from the previous work.
    Lesson learned: CTRL+Shift

At the same time, working on some free-lance works on the sides.
    Lesson learned: Command (Apple)+Shift+N

I took up BFA Advertising Arts.
Surely, what I can say is that the Arts is a long-streched of avenues and side streets to explore, particularly for those who are more than willing to take the plunge.

    iya: i love your post.

    super_ed: yours is so . . . technologically innovative

eli: i have yet to see an educator who does not regard teaching a calling. teachers remain one of the unsung heroes in this country. unfortunately for some, and out of necessity, they become "domesticated" in other parts of the world.

for those who are inclined to be their own boss and put up their own business, the guiding principle has to be: find something that you really love doing and momentarily forget about the money. this came from an accountant i know who dared to break away from one of the biggest accounting firms in the country and put up his own. his business has grown and is still growing. he also advised me to read the Enterpreneur mag and learn from the featured inspirational/success stories.

i have yet to find my calling. but sometimes i feel that i am in this world to listen to (but not necessarily solve) other people's problems. now, if only i can make a career out of that.

I think one of the biggest blessings in life is to be able to find out what you are passionate about and turn it into a carreer. You could take your cue from the people who are are doing what they want to do and earn megabucks from it. Knowing what your God-given talents are and honing it, as opposed to putting it aside, is also key to what would spell out your success.

I was "magna" in college - "magna-nine" years. Never got to finish my Economics and Architecture courses. I always wanted to take a course related to the arts but I belonged to a generation where one was encouraged to take a course that would put a title beside your name. I tried but I failed.

I was lucky enough, though, to have an opportunity to join one of the biggest advertising agencies in the country. There, I was able to hone my art skills. I started out with the lowest position in the creative department and worked my way up to Sr. Art Director Without my knowing it, it paved the way to what I found out was my passion.

For the past four years, I have been directing TV commercials and have enjoyed every second of it. I am still learning a lot and this I welcome very much. What is good about this is that I get to do what I love to do most and earn and learn from it.

I would still like to get a degree if I get the chance but my bigggest dream right now is to be able to teach and share what I have learned and what I have been doing.

All these careers, when embraced with unselfish commitment, love and joy in one's heart become noble vocations.

    Cheers, Philmuggers.
