    Default Preserving the cherished...

    Hello all,
Paging the Mac gurus out there...

iNeed help; you see, I've just dropped a pretty penny purchasing some very cherished yet very hard to find DVDs at Barnes... (in short, legally purchased...)

The thing is, I plan on watching these over and over and over again, and my heart's going to break if the discs suddenly "hiccup" over time... (Truth be told, I'm getting quite paranoid about putting them in the DVD player even...)

My question is, is there any way to save and then watch these movies (at no loss for quality) on the HD of my 'Mac without the use of a DVD writer?

I'm presently running a chiclet iBook dual USB w/ DVD-ROM. (no CD writer either.)

    Many thanks.

EDIT: Also, how much space would a typical DVD need?

I'm not sure if this will work as I haven't tested these options:

    1. Make a disc image using toast. Then when you want to watch it, simply mount it. 'Course it might not work with all DVDs
    2. Buy a DVD writer and burn copies. Or if you can't afford it yet, have it reburned, I'm sure some philmuggers out there are willing to do it for a reasonable price.

A typical DVD might consume anywhere from 4 to 8gigs I think.

To add to what Kenneth said, you can also rip (copy/extract to your hard drive) the DVDs using MacTheRipper then use Apple DVD Player or VLC to open/play the VIDEO_TS folders. Exact copy so no loss in quality. You're gonna need a large hard drive to store all those VIDEO_TS folders though. :-)

Best option is to make copies of the DVDs. A time-consuming process (ripping, compressing, burning) but it sure beats watching the DVDs on a small computer screen. ;-)

    Try MacThe Ripper http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14414
    It works and it's free.

i am wondering what kind of movies those are! they seem like classics that i would want to preserve myself!

let me know bro what it is! i am a movie addict myself! (barnes & noble, amazon, the pirates of greenhills, heck, even spectra and cardinal audio yumayaman dahil sa akin!)

    speaking of which...

p.s. guys! can anyone tell me if i can upgrade my combo drive to a super drive? and what the ball park figure it would go for? i would like to catalogue extremely special DVDs myself...

    thanks again!

Actually, they're not really "classics" per se, they're just a collection of films that I really, really like... :P

for the_diva's benefit, and for the curious, here's what I plan to preserve:
    • Neverwhere Boxed Set by Neil Gaiman
    • The Red Violin by Francois Girard
    • The Neverending Story by Wolfgang Petersen
    • Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels by Guy Ritchie
    • The Colour Trilogy (Rouge, Bleu, Blanc) by Kryztof Kryzlowski
    • The Adventures of Tintin (Animated Series) 75th Anniversary Boxed Set by Nelvana

Hmmm, looking at it, at 4-6GB's each, I think I'll have a problem finding space...

Incidentally, I am hunting for Coffee & Cigarettes by Jim Jarmusch, Clerks and Chasing Amy, both by Kevin Smith... If anyone out there knows where I can find these, please lemme know...

    Thanks guys!

Thanks for the feedback guys! Finally freed up some space on my HD; am downloading MactheRipper as we speak... (Hindi kasya lahat, so I guess I just have to prioritise...)

But reading this thread, it made me realise that medyo bad vibes for the films to be confined to the 12' screen of the iBook, so I have another question:

Is there any way for me to connect my G3 iBook to the TV? (I'm not really sure what to look for / how to do it; the closest thing I've ever done to that is to hook up my 'Book to a projector for Keynote / iMovie presentations, using the adapter that came with the iBook...) :wound:

Thanks for all the help so far. It is mucho appreciated.

PS: Mucho thanks too to PatrickGaerlan for the offer to use his Superdrive. Cheers man.
