mpg file cannot be imported to imovie

i have a sony dsc-v1 that i sometimes use to take short videos with. however i cannot import the videos into imovie without losing audio. once i convert the video files from mpg to mov in quicktime the audio is lost. any solutions please? format of the video from the camera is MPEG1 Muxed, 640 x 480 fps 25 data rate 351.3 k/bytes/sec

I use ffmpegX to convert an MPEG movie file's sound track into an mp3 and import that into iMovie. You just need to line up the audio and video using the Timeline Viewer to ensure proper sync.
