it would depend on what compression and for what medium of delivery.

For DV footage, rule of thumb is 2GB per 10 minutes. So for 30 minutes of video, you'll need at least 6GB of free hard disk space.

Just a follow up on Martin's question. How do I compress it for VCD delivery. I got me a 30 min or so raw footage and edited it on Premier which came to about 12 mins final cut. I want to make a VCD copy of it but when I exported the project to quicktime, it came to a whopping 14 gig file. I had no choice but to burn it on DVD. What gives?

    Martin,

If your Digital8 is a Sony, look for an ILink connexion.

Most camcorders are usually supported by IMovie. You can check (help) out as to what camcorders are supported by IMovie.

Bottom line, if you have firewire (ILink) most if not all of the time you can use IMovie! Try it out in IMovie and see what happens. Worse case is that you have to manually press play/stop/rewind/f.forward buttons on the camcorder itself but the video capture usually happens !

    Cheers

I'm also using a Digital 8 videocam and its totally comaptible with iMovie and Final Cut Express. You don't have to manually control anything, iMovie takes over once you plug-in your cam w/ FireWire (iLink).

    Hi hacksaw,

If you have Toast, just drag & drop the 14GB .mov file onto Toast's Video tab window and choose Video CD as the format. It will encode the video to MPEG-1 and burn it as a VCD. If you want more control over the resulting file, use ffmpegX instead. It's not as easy to use as Toast, but you can customize settings for a lot of output formats. For VCD output, there is a preset drop-down menu for one-click encoding. Good luck!
