Default Mac Mini for FCP video editing

Hi guys, please enlighten me or give me your much needed advise if it's feasible for a Mac Mini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo to be used as a base system to run FCP for video editing. Im going to buy the Mac Mini soon to learn FCP while waiting for the right time (budget) to buy a G5. I already have a 20" Apple Cinema display to match with the Mac Mini. If I max out to 2G the memory for the Mac Mini and buy a separate bigger capacity external hard disk drive, would it help? Thanks and God bless!

it will run the fcp. maybe a little slow. you need the universal version. always have a external hard drive.

well i think it will run slow in your mac mini. but i guess if you won't be doing big and long projects then you can live with it.

max out the ram and get an external HD. youll be surprised at what the mac mini can give you. ive been doing so much work on my mac mini id say its been my best bang for the buck mac in terms of ROI.

hi potemkin... i'm really suggesting a mac mini for our group work (mostly on recording audio and presentation) but since i'm not a mac user yet, i can't really tell them how we can maximize it... would you mind what are the kind of "works" you can do with your mini?

not sure what details youd like to get into. but ive done alot of AVPs and music videos/ unplugged videos on this baby. compositing, long edits, short films and a whole bunch of motion graphics stuff on FCP and AE.

I've seen potemkins work, and I must say i am impressed! I went to his office to find two Mac keyboards and a PowerMac G4. I was trying to find the other Mac he was using and I couldnt seem to find it. But there it was, a Mac Mini perched on top of his computer table! I was surprised he was using the Mini for his great projects! Remember Ninas videos? Thats just some of his work.

To get better performance out of your Mac Mini, I suggest you replace the included hard drive with a 2.5" 7200RPM drive with at least 80GBs of space. Mac video or audio apps tend to have software that is very bloated with data. The 7200RPM drive can also speed up your overall system performance giving that Core duo some more boost. Saves up on boot time also. But you need to have ample amount of cooling since these 7200RPM drive tend to heat up very quickly.
