Default LF: Someone who can Transfer Film Reels to Digital Video

Searched for this topic but couldn't find anything.

Is it possible to transfer our old home movies (on 16mm film i think) to digital video?

I was thinking of playing the film reels using our projector and just use a DV cam to film the screen but that sounds so primitive. There must be a better way right?

Does anybody know anyone who provides this service locally?

There is. Roadrunner and Optima offer telecine transfers. I'm not entirely sure if they dub to mini-DV tapes. I had mine transferred to betacam SP. But be prepared for the prices. How long is the material that you want transferred?

telecine is quite expensive--though i know it's a lot cheaper now than it used to be. there are some outfits based in singapore, hongkong and australia that will do it for a reasonable price. if you really want good transfer, there are swiss outfits that are outstanding in terms of quality.

philmug is swarming with ad agency people. perhaps a little nudge-nudge can get you a really good deal. 16mm, afaik, is a toughie, though. australia might be your best bet.

brain, i like your avatar. "the laughing man."

thanks Brain1976 and Kubrick. Sounds like expensive options. And sounds like there's a local business opportunity. will do further internet research on the swiss, singapore and australian options.

its also a good excuse to save for an australian trip.

you can have optima dub your film to mini-dv.you just ahave to bring your camera there so they can dub your video from beta sp to mini dv via s-video. ive done it a couple of times. also you might want to try lvn. i heard they have telecine there na, might not be good as optima or roadrunner though.

    Hello krisbau,

you can tranfer your 16mm film to video by your self

step 1: you need a dark room (bedroom will do sarado lahat) you may need to adjust the amount of projector lamplight to avoid wash out
step 2: connect your audio out (from your16mm projector & adjust the sound to your desire level) to audio in to DV camera position your camera at the center of projection screen to avoid keystone effects. Yon lang...

    try to experiment.....

    regards

thanks potemkin. i'll check out optima prices. i just had some email correspondence with this outfit in australia. they respond very fast!! they scan the film frame by frame then transfer to mini dv. their quote to me was almost $600 for 10 reels. so even though "filming the projector screen" was something i was hoping i wouldn't have to do, gregmedia, your option seems to be the most practical.

... but we'll see. well-preserved childhood memories on dv or an ipod photo? Hmmm...
